Remove stuck heatsink from Athlon64 socket 939?

I remeber reading horror stories back in the day of bent pins on the socket 939 and they cannot be straightend once bent. My CPU has a factory heatsink with that stupid thermal pad. It will not come off easy so I stopped. Is there a way to do this without ripping the CPU out of the socket?

typically you cant twist because there is a stupid platic surround. I would just pull straight up. If the machine is functional, run prime for 10-15 and try again. If the machine isn't functional find another means to introduce heat.

There should be enough play that you can get enough twisting action in there to break the bond, and then pull it off like you'd normally do.

if you let the CPU run for a while (to generate some heat) it should also get easier.

I like to warm the heatsink with a lighter or a heat gun first. Makes it much easier. Use gloves and then twist like that guy said above.

use torch to heat heatsink first.

Keep twisting. If you make no progress, apply alcohol or brake parts cleaner (not throttle body cleaner - will dissolve plastics) and keep twisting. Is it possible to pry between the CPU and heatsink with a razor?

Heat makes it easier, but ultimately in some scenarios it simply won't be possible to separate the two. Though it's not recommended to rip the processor out, in practice it usually doesn't hurt anything. I've pulled out 939 and 754 processors in exactly that manner.

Remove the cpu and heatsink and use a hairdryer to soften the thermal pad. Its an old trick.

*****EVERY***** socket 478 and 754 cpus I have taken the HS off, came unsocketed. Some with minor bent pins that I staightened. I have never done a 939 but have read horror stories. I will heat it and hope for the best.

I've pulled plenty of 939s and 754s out with the heatsink in the past, as long as you pull the heatsink out orthogonal to the motherboard, you shouldn't bend any pins (I've never bent any anyways).

So this worked.

THrow in freezer in plastic bag.

After a few hours, take out.

Pry with crowbar.

Processor free!

Now, how to de-lid?
