Remove Heatsink?

How long should I turn my computer on to warm up the shin-itsu grease monarch put on my cpu/heatsink. I need to remove it and move it to my new A8N-E board and 7900GT
I have never done this before. Do I need to do serious gaming to loosen it?

P.S. it's only been on since last June and I will clean it and use Arctic Silver 5 this time

Uhh, do you really have to warm it up? It is thermal grease... Otherwise, just put a hair dryer in there and it'll come off fine...

Umm, just remove the heatsink with a slight twist and you are gold.

I don't have a blow dryer. I'll try the slight twist method.

If using the stock heatsink, do as follows.

1. Unlock clip (the locking mechanism for the heatsink to the motherboard)
2. Once heatsink is unsecured, give it a twist right to left to break the bond from the thermal paste.
3. Lift heatsink off of the CPU once the bond between the CPU head (IHS) and Heatsink is broken.

4.Wipe off sweat and crack open a beer from the hard work you have done

lol sounds about right.
Also i would not recomend having a few beers then working on ur comp, u can do some really funny stuff with ur comp

As others have mentioned.. all it takes is a twist.....

Ensure its only a twist horizontally.. with no upwards pressure.. it will loosen right up with no problems..

i've pulled a cpu out of the socket before cuz i didn't use the twist method... lucky for me none of the pins bent... but becareful and go slowly if you have to

run the computer at 100% for 10 minutes. Shutdown. Then twist. No worries for sure then.

Thanks for all you help. I think I'll just keep it on for awile then turn it off, use the twist method, then pull off heatsink, then take a nap from all the stress.

Is reapplying the installing easier or is it also a stress fest?

Reapplying = easy

Just use a paper-thin layer (spread it around with the edge of a business card or something) and clip it back on. Enjoy lower temps.

I guess the most stressful part of installing is seating the CPU.
Just make sure the locking lever is up and the CPU is turned the right way. Don't apply any force as it should just drop right in, lower the lever and the rest should be gravy. Putting on the HSF is a cynch. Put a little bit of AS5 on there, "a dab'll do ya", and set the HSF down. Lock it in and you're good to go.
