Anyone know how to successfully accomplish this? This is removing embedded SP1a, not installed SP1a from windows updates, it was physically on the XP disk when he bought it, and I have no idea how to remove, which is very frustrating. HELP

what's the spec of his PC? I can't see that it would be a good idea to run an unpatched version of XP....

You shouldn't be removing it, you should be upgrading to SP2.

Can you disable the microsoft antivirus and firewall in SP2?

There is no antivirus is SP2. The firewall can be disabled.

His PC is a PIII 866 Mhz 512 PC133 ram, integrated video/sound. I had a copy of xp on it before with no service pack and it ran very fast, but since he has gotten this copy, his pc has slowed to a crawl

There were a number of patches from MS for Pre-SP2 WinXP that caused slowdown. Running anything less than the most up-to-date service packwith all patches is a really bad idea. The only time you shouldn't do it is when you have software you need that specifically doesn't work with it.
