I have a Voodoo 5500 AGP card. I took off the fans but do not know the safest way to remove the heatsinks. They are glued on with some kind of thermal epoxy. Please LMK ASAP what the best way to get them off is. I have two blue orbs with thermal take fans I want to put on it instead.

Seal it in a plastic bag and throw it in the freezer for about thirty minutes and then you'll be able to pry them off with almost no effort. The hard part is finding a plastic bag big enough for a V5.

The above post I threw out there quickly because you did say ASAP.

I killed a V5 in PCI when I installed one of them V5 cooling kits (big copper heatsinks, Delta fans, heatsinks for memory, etc.). I believe I was either overzealous in removal of the old paste and scratched the chips a bit too much or maybe I mixed the new paste incorrectly (1:1 Arctic Silver). I'm responsible for killing my own card.

I was using the PCI flavor 'cause I've got a p3 933 on a BX chipset. Fortunately I had the AGP flavor also from when I was using a p3 550. Now I'm scared of ruining another card so I have my 933 running at 700 megs. It's a heck of a thing to have to run a 933 at 700 for probably an unreasonable fear.

Anyway, I hope you're smarter than me and it all works out. I'm sure you are and it will and now I'm just rambling. Good luck!

I just poped off my voodoo 3 3000 heatsink. I put it in the freezer for 30min then used a butter knife to pry it off with little effort. I lowered my temps by 12 degrees celcius with my new celeron heatsink on it.

Its very easy to "kill" a card doing this. The first leap and most touchy of course is removing the old HS without taking a big hunk of the chip with it. I used the cold methode and have others V5 users but dont do the same with a GForce. Tennmax has good info on it right here.

Easiest and most commin way is to get adheasive on the hair thin wires leading into the memory or the main chips. Even with minimal conductivity a short here will kill the card...but fear not with a very in depth cleaning you can lazerus this mistake. It took me five reinstal trys and getting the toothpic alcohol and cloth to clear up this one.

Next is using the pins that come with the blorbs, they dont work worth poop and they dont line up too the holes on the V5. If you force them your blorb will arch up away from the chip and your chip will burn up. Also if you use the good stuff (Artic Silver Adheasive) read the instructions valuable info in there too. You can use the frag tape but that just never gave me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Finnaly it's an expensive card your about to pry stuff off of so basicly anything above is there for you if you are nuts. That is to say if anything goes wrong dont blame me,I didnt make you do anything. If anything I hope I made you just a little more nervous about it and you do a lot of reading and thinking before you try it.....Best of luck to ya!:D
