Remotely control a PC?

Hi all,

I've got a desktop and laptop hooked up at home and sometime I am so lazy that I lie in bed and enjoy a movie or something on the laptop from the desktop. What I would like to do ( and I know it is possible ) is to shutdown the desktop once I am done and want to go to sleep. Could anyone give me a pointer on this? Is VNC a solution?

What about Linux?

VNC is free and it works well. I use it to control my monitor-less and keyboard-less servers.

You can also use Net Meeting 3.1's remote desktop sharing. Free and fast because of low overhead.

Cheers!

Netmeeting works. VNC is better, and free too. I would use Tridia VNC though, as it "seems" to be a little faster, as it is supposed to be more bandwidth optimized, and is supposed to be more secure.

Any way to prevent the tray icon from being displayed with VNC? I like the speed of VNC and the fact that clipboard is synchronous but the tray icon allows the user to disable the service or change the password! I can disable the icon totally in Netmeeting via the registry...the icon is still there but all the options in the popup box are grayed out! Perfect for those users that like to monkey with everything! :Q

Cheers!

With Linux you can do ANYTHING you want remotely. Hey - I don't even have mouse/keyboard/monitor on my linux machine! You can use in text mode from telnet(or SSH) or download X server emulation (for any platform) and run it in GUI remotely (text only is better IMHO).

Windows XP Pro (not Home) is supposed to offer you same features. Didn't try it yet, sorry.

Without using a multiuser network operating system (like linux), I would recommend sub7 or back orifice.
