Remotely Connecting to Router

Alright I have a Linksys WRT54G router. I want to be able to remote desktop to my computers behind the router...as well as remotely connect to the router. I am also behind a Sonicwall hardware firewall. I am assuming I will need to set up a vpn to gain access behind the firewall, but how do I remotely connect to my computers behind the router??

First off, you are going to run into problems because the Sonicwall and WRT54G are redundant. Both should be able to act as a firewall, VPN endpoint (although the Sonicwall implementation is better) and router.

Personally I would setup the Sonicwall on the perimeter and turn the WRT54G into a WAP. Then you can use the VPN server on the Sonicwall to accomplish your goal.

This is a frat house. I am a brother, but I take care of the network. I have a router because each room only has one connection. I have 3 computers so a router is necessary. I would just use a simple switch, but I have a laptop that I use wireless with sometimes.

The best solution I've found for remote access behind a router/firewall is Logmein. It's free and it works ridiculously well. I can't see this not solving your problem.

1. turn off DHPC on WRT
2. Assign an IP in the scope of the rest of the network to the LAN side
3. Plug network into a LAN port of WRT
4. ???
5. Profit
