Remote wonder signal distance

hey,
just got an AIW w/remote. i've tried putting the IR unit as far away from the case as possible (given that the damn cord is only about 2 1/2 feet long), but my reception distance still sucks. if i'm more than three feet from the IR unit....forget it. no signal reception. suggestions?

Something's not right. Its not IR, its FM and mine work anywhere in the house.
