Remote winamp?

Alright, here's the situation.

We have a server sitting down on the first floor of the house that hosts our website. It has no keyboard/mouse unless we really have to touch it, which is rare. Out of the 100 guys that are in the house regularly, I'd really only be comfortable with five of them touching the server. With that said....

Someone had the genius idea to use the server to host music for parties. They ran an audio cable down to the basement, now they want me to set it up so people can put music on it, etc. I don't really like this idea, I think the server should just be a server, but hey its not like I'm the tech chair or anything....oh wait I am...oh well.

I want to set up something remote so that morons aren't actually having access to the server. I already set up FTP for them to upload music. Now what I'm looking for is a way for them to access that music remotely, preferably without remote desktop. I suppose I could set up a user account that has access to nothing but Winamp, but not all of them have XP Pro. Is there anything I can set up to allow them to basically just play a playlist, maybe skip songs?

Use a web based script to allow them to change the song. Something like this should work. Also set up shoutcast so they can stream to their pc's. Be warned that you are putting the frat in a situation where they can be sued by the RIAA. You can also get remote desktop clients for win2k.

I'll check out that script, thanks...as for the RIAA, this isn't going to be used for us to share music with each other, or to broadcast music over shoutcast, its just going to be used to allow us to throw all of our music on the server and hit play, rather than swapping CD's all night.

Is there no way you can make another computer from salvaged parts just for music?

At my frat we used an old pc that was pretty crappy and have it hooked up to a reciever thingy in our basement. The monitor, mouse and keybaord are pretty crappy, so we don't care too much if it gets a little messy. Its easier to have a pc you can beat the crap out of it than rather use a production server and have people mess with it.

We did this back in 98 😉

But cant you give them basic user privledges and lock them out and only give them permission to the mp3 folder? Once you do that setup a temp folder with write permissions for them to dump files into.

Might be a good way to get lots of free music.
