Remote start seems like such a great idea...

Until it costs you a few grand in repairs :(

I'm surprised (and somewhat skeptical) that a Honda has enough guts to start itself & drive through a garage door while in gear with the e-brake on. OR that the battery lasted long enough to do it via the starter.

Ayup. Remote start on manual = trouble.

That said, I LOVED my remote start when I lived in Alaska.

Leaving a manual transmission in gear with a remote car starter? Dam, I would have started that puppy up by accident myself in the morning.

Right, because those lawn mover engines won't have enough torque to pull the e-brake.

I doubt my V8 could do it either. I'm obviously not going to go try it but the engine would almost certainly just die.

And regardless of how it happened it's his own damn fault for leaving it in gear.

That's a stupid installation mistake. Almost all auto-starts have neutral safety switches.

First: They recomend not to install remote starts in cars with manual transmissions.

Second: The idiot probably wired the remote start AFTER the neutral safety switch or AFTER whatever devices prevents you from starting the car when it's in gear.

I've installed alarms and remote starts before. It needs to be done properly.

Thrird: It could of been much worse. Children could of been in the way or it could of been parked right in front of a house. Also the damage isn't honestly that bad to his car. The front bumper looks messed up and the fender possibly. But the rest is paint.

Most remote starters don't rev the engine up to 8 grand and then dump the clutch. We're talking about his starter motor managing to both turn the engine and move the car and overpower the emergency brake for long enough to drag it through a garage, without the battery dying.

Not saying it's impossible, but it's surprising to me too.

+ ebrake is too much. I really doubt it would work. I can move my car in first with the starter alone no problem, but in gear, with an ebrake, and through the garage door....I think he just made it up so he doesn't look like an idiot.

Ditto. I've never had a car that wouldn't stall if you tried to put it in gear with the parking brake on.

Neutral safety switch FTW.

I know on my Suby there's a neutral safety on the trans so that you can't engage cruise control with the car in neutral. Wouldn't any manual trans car with cruise have such a safety device?

That said, I pondered installing one in mine since my turbo timer (yes, not necessary but better safe than sorry in my book) forces me to leave the car in neutral.

I'm sure that's exactly what he did. :D

a 6th gen accord isn't "2 to 3 weeks old."

i can only thank god that he put this poor car out of its misery before the owner could strap more ricer fiberglass to it.

also, i don't know why you guys think the car actually started. the starter alone would be enough to do this, especially if he didn't actually have the e-brake pulled tight (i know some people do it a few clicks and don't realize it hasn't engaged). i've heard of people using the starter alone to drive their car to the next freeway exit when they got stranded (slowly, of course). 1st gear would give the starter a fair bit of grunt.

A starter motor has more than enough twist to move a car. Bear in mind that the handbrake only operates on the rear wheels, and this is a FWD car

Another vote for attempted suicide by the car. He just couldn't take being disfigured anymore.
