Remote Software

Is there any kind of remote software which will allow me to go on somebody's computer and just view it. I do not want to accidentally type in their computer, just want to be able to go in the computer and view only, only get control at certain times.

If you're only using Windows, you can use Remote Desktop. You can find it here in Windows XP:

Start > Programs > Accessories > "Remote Desktop Connection" shortcut

or

Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > "Remote Desktop Connection" shortcut

If you are on the same network, just type in the IP Address of the computer and it will bring up a prompt for the username and password to login to that computer. Note that it will lock the computer being used, so if someone is using the computer when you remote into the machine, they will get kicked out. Likewise, they can also kick you out if they log back onto the machine.

Another option is VNC, which allows you to share the screen with the person using the computer. There's UltraVNC, TightVNC, RealVNC, etc. If you need to access a network remotely (like get to your home PC from work), you can use a VPN. I like LogMeIn Hamachi (free for home use). You use Hamachi to connect to your home network, just like you were plugged in at home, and then you use Remote Desktop to view your PC remotely. Pretty neat stuff 🙂

Do you want the user to know you are there? Your options are much more limited if the answer is no.

DAMEWARE!!!

"Dameware" its the Shiznit just what your looking for, just get the correct ports open on there side!!! if they dont know how to portfoward use hamachi and create a virtual vpn with them (no port fowarding required). I do this all the time its awesome I use hamachi for the connection on all of our laptops that have air cards so there ip address change constantly with hamachi I can install it as service on there machines and I always have a vpn connection to there machine when there online no matter where they are or what ip they have. Hamachi is free Dameware has a 30 day trial. You have to create a windows installer package with dameware and install is on there computer I use a proprietary password and username on the installer package. Its pretty simple once you figure it out

I like to use TeamViewer

It is free for private use.

http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx

You would download the full version, and then get the user to 'join a session'. They give you an ID and password. You type it in and your connected!

This is best used for when the machines are seperated by the internet.

Yeah if One does not mind the use of a 3rd party server, TeamViewer is a good choice.

TeamViewer is actually based on UltraVNC, set up with a go between Sever for easier Internet use.

Sorry for the late response.

I don't mind if the other party knows I'm there, but the teamviewer is kind of a pain where they have to connect using presentation. I want to be able to be the one to connect.

Dameware is probably your best bet. It's not free, but it's definitely worth the money.

If you don't want them to know you're there, then Spectresoft makes a monitoring software that might be useful to you.

You have here few solutions mentioned.

Next step is action.

Try few of these between you own computers, and make your own decision..

I like to use Teamviewer because of their ability to show feeds in a browser i.e. you don't need to install/run extra software.

I do not know what the means.

The process is like this, both computers start the TeamViewr.

The screen comes up in each computer with its own ID and PW.
teamview.jpg

The person that his computer has to controlled has to read his ID and PW, and tell it to the person that going to control the computer (that can be done through Phone, email, messenger, what ever).

The person that is in control types the ID and click on Connect to Partner, type the PW in the next popup, and Voila you are in control of the other computer.

If you want the other person to see your screen you have two options

1. You stay in control and check on your side the Presentation.

2. The other side should put your ID and PW in. Then you can do locally do your presentation and the other side would see it on his screen.

TeamViewer has also portable version

Download unzip to a flash drive, or any folder on the Hard drive, and run it, Nothing else is needed.
I do not thing that anything can be simpler than this.

Some people have mentioned RDP. Keep in mind that this is only available on professional versions of Windows, not the home ones.

RDP from win7 to win7 can do 1080P 30fps with no audio lag 😉

try that with the other ones mentioned.
