when trying to remote into other PCs on my network I get the following error on ALL 3 PCs:
-------------------------------------------------------------
(name of error msg box) REMOTE DESKTOP DISCONNECTED

the client could not connect to the remote computer

remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections
It is also possible that the network problems are preventing your connection.

Please try connection again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator.

it doesn't matter if I try and connect from PC 1 to 3, 3 to 2, 2 to 1, etc.
terminal services and remote all seem to be set "on" under services.msc
I have all 3 PCs within the trusted Zone of ZA. I've also tried disabling ZoneAlarm and attempting to connect but to no prevail.

PC 1 and 3 hard wired to a LinkSYS WRT54G, PC 2 is the wireLESS laptop.
 
sorry my bad. ALL PCs have winXP Pro SP2 and have accounts with PW and admin rights.

my computer --> remote?
Sorry but I don't see the option there

when doing netstat -an from CMD I don't get the TCP 0.0.0.0:3389 on any PC though 🙁

No, XP Home does not have the 'remote desktop' feature...

OH, my bad on that! Well that was pretty damn stupid on M$'s part then....how gay!

 
If you go into My Computer -> Properties, and don't see a "Remote" tab, then you don't have XP Pro -- or have some customized/hacked version.

And M$ isn't stupid, they're just greed. I'll pay more for Pro simply b/c of RDC.
 
In my readings on remote desktop I always ran into references that it is used on a domain. A workgroup is not a domain and I always ended up with the results you are having. I donwloaded and installed Ultravnc and it worked right away, no hiccups. I turned off the windows firewall on the server just to be on the safe (no hangups) side.
 
Remote Desktop will work with or without a domain. You get more security and control if you use a domain however.

On the System Properties window (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/enableremote.mspx) click the properties tab and verify that it is infact XP Pro. As said before if you do not have the Remote Desktop option, you either have XP Home, or its possibly because Terminal Services is not running, but you've verified that it is.

Secondly make sure your firewall is accepting connections for port 3389 properly. I wouldnt trust ZoneAlarm to do that itself. Also, I'm not sure if it still does this, but back a few years, my buddy had ZA installed on his computer and shut it down to try something, and it just ended up blocking ALL traffic. The only way to get packets flowing again was to either uninstall ZA or start it up again.
 
I assume that any user that can log on at the pc being remote controlled will be able to logon remotely with regular user name/password?

This usually works because they are members of the administrators group.

Keep in mind this is not always the case. Users who are in the administrators group, but have a blank password will not be allowed to connect over RDP. Also, an account that is NOT in the admins group that can logon locally will not be able to logon over RDP unless it is a member of the remote desktop users group.
 
Thanks everyone for your help. I ended up reghosting all the machines and then had to go in and put the 2nd check mark on the remote tab. I am now able to remote to and from all the machines.
Very strange......but I have seen stranger things.
