I have a file server set up on my network. I plan to disconnect the keyboard, mouse, and display. The system will be accessed only through Remote Desktop Connection.

When I try to connect to the local network IP of the file server using the Remove Desktop Client (RDC), I get the following error message:
The client could not connect. You are already connected to the console of this computer. A new console session could not be established.
I've tried disconnecting mapped drives and restarting both computers, but I still receive this error message.

I think you need to be not logged in on the server machine. Get to the user selection screen (when you boot it) and leave it there. See if you can remote in then.

that shouldnt make a difference. I never log off my workstation and am still able to RD to it.
are you by chance tunneling this connection?

might want to sort through these posts on google to see if you can find something

Eh, my router got confused and swapped the IP addresses around. I was connecting to myself!

I get this error when I try to connect into my work machine via VPN. It is a fluke with our address resolution, and like you said, kill/restart the VPN connection and it works just fine.
