remote desktop (VNC) and linksys port forwarding

Hi,
I'm trying to setup this up to help a brother-in-law. He has DSL with single computer so he is not behind a firewall. I'm behind a firewall which is the linksys router wr54tg. I have tried but not sucessesful trying to setup port forwarding. Any suggesting for an easier software and techniques? thanks

port forwarding is only used for incoming connections initiated externally...there should be no need to forward in your case. just connect his ip address assuming its the external one provided by his DSL provider

Your brother-in-law might not have a Router but his computer is probably protectd by Windows native firewall, or and, a 3rd party software Firewall.

Thus he need to open the ports through his software Firewall/s.
