Remote desktop, teamviewer, or ?

I have a need to connect to my home desktop while I'm in studio at school. Both computers running W7 pro x64, home computer is on a dynamic IP (cable)

I've used remote desktop years ago but I remember the setup being a little convoluted. I started googling for w7 tutorials and I came across a bunch of posts that say to just use teamviewer or some other free third party software:

Thoughts? not sure if I want to open my computer to freebie software.

I use Teamviewer quite often and favor it over all the others due, mostly in part, to its simple setup. I have a home server that I run the service on so that I can connect from home or away. It's simple, unobtrusive and so far, reliable and secure.

I've had pretty good luck with LogMeIn.

I've been using Teamviewer for a while now and love it. As brownstone mentioned, it's easy to setup and reliable. Much better than Remote Desktop, IMHO.

I especially like having an account with all of my systems (home, work, laptop, friends) tied into it. Makes it much easier than having to remember or update IP addresses.

I use Teamviewer occasionally for other people but there is always a possibility of some security breaches with a system like this. For me, it's VPN + RDP.

I've had pretty good luck with LogMeIn.

I use LogMeIn as well simply because it is mindless to install and I can access my home computer from any computer with a browser.

* One time remote connection = Teamviewer
* Repeated remote connections = LogMeIn

You can use Teamviewer for the initial session, because of its simplicity to set up.
During that session you can install LogMeIn for the ability to reconnect without anyone on the other end.

actually, you can use team viewer for a repeated connection. It saves the id for the host computer. I don't use it like this but I know you can.

Remote Desktop in Windows 7 is much improved...especially if both machines are running it.

Reliable, always working (unlike microsoft ones, never got any of those to work, never tried the one in w7 though)

I'm paranoid about 3rd party software (in this domain) as an earlier post mentioned, I'd go with VPN + Remote Desktop.

Though, I'm not sure if they'll allow VPN from a school/college.

Hamachi VPN works well for me, but it's still 3rd party software.

I use Teamviewer whenever my parents have problems with their system. It works very well without me having to go open up firewall ports and such.
