I am trying to enable a Remote Desktop Connection, using the built in feature from Windows XP Professional but am having a lot of difficulty. I am trying to connect to my friends computer in Virginia as she is having some issues with her video chat configuration and trying to go over it on the phone is driving us both nuts! I had her go into the Command Prompt and do an "ipconfig" to get her IP Address, but when I type it in to RDC I get nothing. Is there something I am not doing correctly? I made sure that her PC was able to accept Remote Dekstop Connections and that ZoneAlarm was off when I tried to make the connection. I have done it successfully between my computers on my network, and to my school's network, but just can't seem to get hers to work. I am using Charter broadband (3000/256) and she is connected to the LAN at her apartment building. Both PC's have Windows XP Professional SP1a and all critical/windows updates. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue with my gfs computer while she was at school. I had her IP, I could ping it from anywhere, Zonealarm was shut down, and RDC was enabled, but I still couldn't connect. I could connect from her's to mine though. I think the problem was the school's main firewall wasn't allowing traffic in on that port (3389). Since you say she is on the apartment's LAN, it sounds like it might be a similar situation.

do this

telnet her.pcs.ip.address 3389

If you can get a a connection the problem might be software related , else it might be a nat / firewall issue along the line
