Remote Desktop Performance

Can anyone tell me when I log into my server (or any other computer on my network), via Remote Desktop -- this includes my WHS... what exactly is running the remote desktop? The computer I am running the remote desktop on or the actual computer being accessed?

Is there anything I can do improve the performance? At times logging on to my WHS is soooooooooo slow it's not funny. If I log on to my main rig (Q9550 with 8GB RAM), from my netbook... it smokes. Is it the network speed that determines everything, or the CPU speed or the RAM and of which system?

It takes very little hardware resources to run an Remote Desktop session on a PC. If you are experiencing poor performance, I would put my money on two causes:
1 - The server you are remoting into is bogged down with other tasks
2 - You have a network problem (bad cabling, duplex mismatch, etc...could be anything at this point)

all of the above. i have an ancient p4-2.4 and it will disconnect/reconnect and lag under heavy i/o or stress. connecting to a e6700 with ssd - never any problems.

theres alot of tuning that can be done to tweak network rdp to be more resilient if you google around. the vpn folks know all about tuning (both sides) to work in less than ideal conditions.

WHS has a connector software that has to be installed on the Compute that controls it, and it is used for Remote work with it.

In any case, WHS is not a Work Station, and beside some configuration there is No reason to Run it from Remote.

What are you doing with the RDT on the WHS?

vnc is ballz slow compared to rdp.

you know windows 2008 R2 you can do AERO and DUAL independent display over lan; of course you need win7 as a client. msoft claim they got a special rdp for 1080p over rdp too.

btw media extenders (xbox 360) to win7/vista media center are using RDP with logfile playback and always have.
