I've heard tell you can run turn-based games like CivIII that way, although I've not tried it.

Thats instant termination here =/
they got that port locked tighter than a drum..
and they monitor every PC in the building with a program called witness to make sure we are staying where they want us.

remote desktop is one of the few reasons to buy XP Pro over 2000 Pro

Win2k has a free terminal services client...

also VNC can do all this

And those who dont know what it is/how to use is google is your friend there are many tutorials on how to use/configure it.

win 2000 pro does have a client but NO server. it can't allow others to use the host machine.

vnc is ok, but it doesn't work as well as Remote Desktop.

Now just install the web client that lets you run it via IE.

That's really fun :)

you're not a real geek until you remote desktop to a machine then remote to another machine. ;) I've done it with Remote Administrator + PCAnywhere... not XP's own though.

Is there a "Remote Desktop for dummies" web site out there?

Our HTPC (Dell PowerEdge 400SC server) won't be connected to a monitor, I'd like to control it remotely within the house over WiFi. Can both licenses be XP Home or does one have to be XP Pro?

Read MS's guide, pretty cool. I never considered the possibilities of this before, it sounds interestig.

So from the client computer, you first set up a VPN using the IP address of the computer you want to connect to? Do I have that right? And then from there you just open it up and enter the computer name.

It depends on the firewall setup. If they have some sort of packet mangling going on you're probably screwed. AIM uses lots of dynamic UDP/TCP ports that they would in essence have to block completely if they're not using a packet shaver (quite easy as well) but that would limit certain other things that they might need connectivity for. It's quite possible that they've blocked the RDP ports as well so remote desktop will probably not work. If it does however, of course you can run AIM.

As far as your router, you'll have to open up the RDP port range in order to pass through from school.

yeah you can download the client here :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx

This software package will install the client portion of Remote Desktop on any of the following operating systems: Windows 95, Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000. (This is the same version of the client software as in Windows XP Service Pack 1.) When run, this software allows older Windows platforms to remotely connect to a computer running Windows XP Professional with Remote Desktop enabled.
