Remote Desktop help

I'm trying to setup remote access to my parents computer, today I went out and I set it up to allow remote connections so I can connect to it from my house. I set myself up a user with admin privileges and a password. I got their IP address from whatismyip.com, I got home and tried to connect but can't. Not sure what the problem is, the error that comes up says that remote connection isn't enable on the computer or the computer that i'm connecting to is off. Both which are not true. I'm using Win7 Ultimiate on both machines. I can connect to all the computers on my network without any problems but any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Most likely there is firewall blocking it somewhere. It could be on either your parents computer or their router. You will have to forward the port on the router or open it through the firewall. An easier way to get remote access to their computer would be to use something like Logmein or Teamviewer. You can just install those and go, no router configurations or external ip addresses needed.

Thanks, I'll check them out.

Yap, in a situation like yours TeamViewer is the best solution (much better and more flexible than logmein).

Thanks guys. I setup remote desktop all my computers on my network so I was hoping it was that easy for this one. Oh well, thanks fore the suggestions I'll give them both a look at.

If they have a router, all you need to do is forward port 3389 to their computer's IP address. (the one assigned by the router, usually something like 192.168.1.100)

TeamViewer is really good for getting around the NAT router problem, like JackMDS suggested.

Another way to go is LiteManager. You can set it up on your parent's computer to do a "callback" to your own computer every 60 seconds(default) or whatever interval you want. That also gets around the NAT router problem without needing a central server like TeamViewer uses.
