I have windows XP PRO machine at home DMZ'd, its used as my web server and CS server and works like a champ.

I currently use logmein.com, which is allright, but its MEH. I'd like to get mstsc working (aka windows remote desktop).

When I am at home, I can connect remotely, obviously. I have a static ip at home for the little server, and I know my IP address. I have 3389 port forwarded to that IP, but it does not seem to work from work.

I guess I wonder if I am missing a step, or if my work blocks this kind of thing...any ideas? Maybe a way to test if my work blocks it?

Did you make sure that RD connections are enabled? (Under System --> Remote)

You change the port that RDC uses via a registry modification. That might be something to try to see if 3389 is blocked.

I can remote in on LAN, so I know RD is enabled ^_^.

Is there a way to check if that port is blocked? Where in registry would I try changing it? To say 4098?

Is that another piece of software? Id prefer to just use the built in remote desktop for windows, works great and I don't have to have another piece of software on the machine.

Inquiring minds want to know.

I have a remote system at a clients that I use for testing on.

When on their LAN, I have remote access.

Off LAN - using the VPN, I can not seem to get to it.

UltraVNC... i use it all the time. it needs (depending on the port you set if any) the port range of 5900-5910 to be open, or forwarded to the proper computer. you DID open them on the router right? if you want to specify a specific port per machine use Display N* and the number you want. (1-10). which equals port 5900-5910 that you set on the router to be open.

btw, if you want to use RD so bad, why didn't you just install hamachi from logmein?..... you can set up a personal vpn for yourself, and use RD to whatever computer you add to it. i am at work, but i can type the name of my computer at home to RD into it. i use hamachi though as a link to work so i can ultravnc to my work computer from home without going through the companies vpn.

I have that RANGE open. I also have my server DMZ'd. I tried differnet N*'s....no luck. I get a connection failed - error reading protocol version.

I have not tried 'hamachi'.

edit : tried installing hamachi and I cannot get it working from my work computer, haha.

we are rather secure here ^_^

dunno if it makes a difference to you: to get mine connected to the hamachi network, i had it running at home and created my network there, and joined from work, since i had to punch through the company firewall from the inside out back home.

I didnt see any specifics settings to connect to a specific IP, was there a place that I am supposed to?

I installed it on my machine at home and it installed fine, pressed the lil power button and it got an IP fine...not so much on my work end.

That is why I question where to put in an IP address on my work machine, or any client machine for that matter.

haha, I cannot open any ports here at work. I kind of have to work with what I got.

I created a computer name, it gave me an IP...I also created a network called vivithemage on my home computer. Is there anything I have to do to connect to that created network from the hamachi at work now?

ViviTheMage, for you to be have both VNC and RDP failing to reach your home network would suggest that using the DMZ option in your router may be the problem. Generally DMZ means that PC is directly exposed to the Internet. I do not use DMZ features on my router. I redirect the WAN IP+port to a specific static address on my LAN IP+port. Your router should have a system log that will show when a match is made to the rule - can you find it (not always easy to find)?

Some things to try:
[*]Try access tests from another location - maybe a friend's home

[*]2. Take PC out of DMZ mode, redirect WAN IP+port 3389 (and 59xx ports forVNC) to your XP PRO's static LAN IP address+port. This will also allow you to get to your XP PRO machine (it must have a local LAN static IP address but you use the WAN address).

Both VNC and RDP cab work in situations where client side Firewall does not need modification (this would be your at work)

if you created a computer name for both your machine at work and at home, and got ip's for both, and created a network for them from home, you're almost there. from work, join the network you created at home. it should punch through and connect to it.

I did not get an IP for my work laptop though.
