Remote Desktop Connection

Nocturnal

Lifer
I'm trying to connect to my home pc from work.

I have Windows XP Pro with RDC enabled along with a user with a password.

I try connecting to my IP address and nothing happens.

However, I'm guessing that it's due to my Zone Alarm firewall blocking all incoming attempts without me OKing the connection. Am I right?

Do I need to disable my firewall?

2/7/04 update

What settings do I have to type/enable when I go to right click on my computer, properties and then onto remote, add user etc.

I have an account with a password. When I try to connect to my IP I cannot connect at all. I am on broadband.

I don't think you need to completely disable the firewall, just un-block the ports that RDC uses... though I don't know what ports these are. I'm guessing if your home PC is online all day that you have broadband; try forwarding the ports that RDC uses as well if you are using a router. I know that this works with VNC, so I don't see why it wouldn't with RDC.

The way to go about it.

Disable the Firewall, and if you have a Router put the computer on the DMZ.
COnce you get a connection, Enable the Firewall and put rules to open RDC ports.

If it works take the computer Off the DMZ and open the same ports in the Router.

Same can apply to set any other type of remote, ftp server etc.

BTW if you have two computers on your LAN No need to go to another location, in order to set and test the RDC or FTP etc.

When the Firewall is Open and the computer is on the DMZ set to be ready for connection. You can use a second computer on your LAN using your own External IP to connect through the Internet to the server computer to check if every thing is working.

The thing is I only have one compujter at home so I have no need for a router. So if I am not using a router how will I do it? Just unblock the port in Zone Alarm?

Yeah, open the ports.

If it works with ZA disable, and you can not make it working with ZA On get another Firewall ZA acts quirky at times.
