I'd like to take the XP Remote Desktop Connection client and use it on a 2K box instead of the regular TS client for the extra features (leave sounds, desktop colors, connection speed, ect) but I've been unable to find a seperate install on the XP Pro cd. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so, where I can find the install files?

Gracias.

As far as I know it is not possible. I believe it is a system feature built into XP and it's a damn good one too. Probably a major selling point for XP Pro. I know I use it all the time from my laptop to my main desktop.

Hope is not lost though. Pick up a copy of PC anywhere. That'll do everything remote desktop does (sans sounds I believe but don't quote me on that)

Ahh, I would just continue using the regular TS client that comes with 2K before I dropped money on PC Anywhere. It's possible that it's buried inside one of the .cab files, need to dig a little deeper. It's also possible that if you did find the .exe it would tell you it wasn't designed for 2K. The search continues...

I have remote desktop connection turned off on my XP box and instead use VNC to access it from my laptop. In terms of security and performance, would it be better if I just uninstalled VNC and started using Remote Desktop Connection?

I don't like how everything is choppy in VNC, but I do like how you can access your machine from any machine with a connection and browser...

It'll also bluescreen your box. Is this an added feature? :D

<< Link to MS XP Remote Client

This will allow you to use the XP client with TS(I do it right now)

Perfect! This is exactly what I was looking for. The odd file name threw me off. Was expecting a RemoteDesktop dir or something similar w a setup.exe underneath.

For those interested, you can also find the install on your XP cd under x:\support\tools\msrdpcli.exe

TS/Remote Desktop is smooth as silk in a LAN environment and only slightly stutters at moments across cable. I use it via 56k for my dialup to work and it's still usable but not speedy. As long as your taking proper security measures w passwords, renamed admin acct, disabled guest, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about security. It uses 40-bit encryption by default but you can bump it to 128 if it will help you sleep at night.

Add in the fact that it's built in to the OS and you have a winner. The only downside I can think of is that on non-XP machines you have to install the client.

There's even a linux client for it found here www.rdesktop.org
Heard it works really well :)

I've been using terminal services remote administration option for awhile now and the only thing I can recommend is to configure it so that all users are logged off after a specific amount of time so that they don't stay connected "forever".

I'm trying to do the same thing. I have my main xp corp box and I'm tryin to set up remote desktop on my win2k server box. I installed the software on the win2k box, and I'm able to do the remote desktop thing from the server to the xp pro box, yet I'm STILL unable to do it from the xp box to the 2k box. The error if gives is that the computer must be busy, or its not set up correctly. There must be some settings somewhere I need to change to enable the remote thing on the 2k box. Any suggestions?

Do you have Terminal Services installed on the Server box? Install it and set it up for Remote Admin and you will be good.

with all of this remote desktop expertise assembled, I have to ask a related question.

Has anyone gotten the remote audio to work? I would love to control my HTPC from the upstairs pc, but when i login to my remote connection it says that there is no audio device. anybody figured out the trick?

i use VNC (made by at&t labs), but if you want save diskspace and use a lot less resources.. load up microsoft netmeeting (by going to run, then typing "conf") and simply go to the "remote desktop sharing" and enable it. make sure you setup all the options in it to make your sharing securer.
