<< I have remote desktop connection turned off on my XP box and instead use VNC to access it from my laptop. In terms of security and performance, would it be better if I just uninstalled VNC and started using Remote Desktop Connection?
I don't like how everything is choppy in VNC, but I do like how you can access your machine from any machine with a connection and browser... >>
TS/Remote Desktop is smooth as silk in a LAN environment and only slightly stutters at moments across cable. I use it via 56k for my dialup to work and it's still usable but not speedy. As long as your taking proper security measures w passwords, renamed admin acct, disabled guest, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about security. It uses 40-bit encryption by default but you can bump it to 128 if it will help you sleep at night.
Add in the fact that it's built in to the OS and you have a winner. The only downside I can think of is that on non-XP machines you have to install the client.
