Remote Connection

Ok Guys I need some help here.
I have never done this.

My computer at the office is running Win XP Pro and my computer at home is running Win 2000 Pro.
Have a Linksys Router at Home.

How do I connect from the Office to my home computer remotely?????

In depth explanation appreciated.

Thanks

Does 2000 pro support remote connection? I think 2000 server, advanced server do, but you need to have The RDP protocol on the computer you want to connect TO. As far as I know, only XP pro supports that feature.
You can install the client software on the computer you want to connect FROM. It is already included in xp pro and home, and can be installed on 98, ME.

Use a program like PCAnywhere.

All you need to do is to forward a port in your router. It pops- up a virtual desktop of your remote PC.
Pretty cool program (by Symantec).

Very very simple! And you don't need any extra programs.

XP Pro has RDP (Terminal Services) server built in. To enable it (from the XP Pro computer at work): Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Remote tab > check "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"

If the computer is behind a firewall, make sure port 3389 is open and forwarded correctly.

At home on the Win2k machine, fire up the MSTSC client (here), and point it to the IP of your work computer.

he wants to connect from the xp machine TO the 2k machine. he needs the RDP server app, which I do not think is on 2K. Sounds like a 3rd party app is what you need.

<Homer> Doh! </Homer> Yeah. I should get this dislexia checked out. 😉

Anyway, to redeem myself: There's a good freeware program called VNC that includes both client and server. Easy to setup and use... not as fast as RDP though, but as fast as PCAnywhere.
