Remote Connection Questions

Hi Guys

I have 3 pc's in a work group called workgroup.

One pc is Vista Premium, Vista Basic & Xp Home.

For the XP machine, from my Vista Rig, when I get the MSTSC / console up I enter the IP & the users name & password of the account of that XP machine and it doesn't work.

Also, if I do this by name should I enter for example

"Workgroup\Jason"

Then I enter the correct user name and password for that machine ( which I try locally and works ). On all three machines remote assistance is enable and firewalls off.

Any help guys would be appropriated

Can you do that on XP home?

I didn't think you could, also you may need to check your settings in the router, or are you using a switch?

It needs to be XP Pro in order to support RDP, yes. XP Home has Remote Assistance, which is not the same thing. Remote Assistance just lets a user sitting at the XP Home machine send a request (usually via email) to another computer for assistance, at which point the other computer can connect for a single session.

XP Pro includes Remote Desktop which acts somewhat like Terminal Services but only allows one connection at a time. Or, as Jack mentioned, you can use VNC to establish the connection and you won't need to deal with the hassle of upgrading the operating system.
