Remote Administration in Win2K

Hi,

I'm fairly new at this topic. I have pcanywhere but have no idea how to set it up so i can access my desktop from my laptop when i'm at work or through dialup from the laptop. If anyone have some good tips please show me. I have cable modem at home and serving about 4 desktops through a hub. How can I possibly get access to my computer through my laptop when i'm at work using pcanywhere or any application that you guys know? Thank you!

Hi,

PCA is a good tool for remote administration. Setting up is fast and easy. Just install PCA, go to "be a host pc" double click on NEtwork and set the properties that you want in there.

Install PC on your remote computer and create a new connection pointing to your IP address at your home computer.

This should be very easy. Read the readme file if you have any doubts.

There are other products available for remote administration as well. win2K terminal server is an excellent tool to administer win2k remotely. this is only available in the server edition, but IMO, this is the best product out there. you can even administer your computer from web browser.

Then there is VNC, timbuktu, remotely possible, and the list goes on. since you have PCA, I would suggest using PCA. It is a decent remote admin tools.

Win2k server actually comes with a terminal services. It lets you run a Windows terminal over the network - just like PC Anywhere, but with a great difference. In PC Anywhere, you are actually logging into the machine. If anyone walks up to the monitor, they can see you move the mouse, etc. With Win2k's terminal services, it's just like running a remote X client - you can have multiple logins from any machine into that same Win2k server and no one will ever see it. No need for a third party app.

It depends on what level of access you require. W2k allows remote administration through the use of "Computer Management" under "Administrative Tools". Well that is if you are also running W2k at work.

I might miss this, but is that Win2K Pro you're talking about ?

I searched and couldn't find remote mgmt in computer management.


Tranh: win2K terminal server even allows you to administer your computer through web browser. this is a really neat trick and you'll appreciate the fact that you don't have to run any client services to access your computer remotely.
