Somebody at work wants to use Eclipse IDe, and wants my opinion on it. Ok, fine, I've heard some good things about it.

On the eclipse site it references the IBM JRE - I take that as an endorsement and click the link.

Wait - I have to create an account to get it. Grrr. Ok, go through all of that, they collect various marketing information, etc.

Finally get to the download page, click the link ... bang, dead stop.

"Download Director applet cannot be loaded.
Java support must be enabled to run."

Uhm - I don't have Java support. That's why I'm here :roll:
And the real kicker - when I click the FAQ link for Download Directer, what do they reccomend? Download the JRE from Sun, so I can then come back and download the JRE from IBM. 😕
 
There is no benefit to using the IBM JRE with eclipse. I actually have never heard of anyone using it with eclipse. They probably suggest it because a large perecentage of the developers of eclipse are IBM employees.
I use the Sun JRE like dighn, and it works fine. I think you'll find most ppl do.

Downloading it now. Just found it bizarre that IBM tells you to get Suns JRE so that you can get their JRE

Do you know why they need you to get Sun's first? I wouldn't even bother going the IBM JRE route if I was you...

EDIT: Actually I misread the first post... you need Java to download thier JRE? 😕

Which platform are you running on? They only recommend IBM's JRE for Linux and AIX.

Linux
Sun's JRE appears to be working fine so far, though I haven't done much with it yet.
 
lol... that's pretty funny

anyway... get the whole SDK at Sun
no need for any ibm jre... at least for anything I've ever done...

SUN SDK + notepad. .. nuff said.


actually i use JcreatorLite(fre version for non professional use). Love it. nice, easy and clean interface.

Why shouldn't they? Sun's not going to support java on every platform that IBM wants it. It'd be a sad world if everyone used only the one jdk. IBM's jdk probably runs better on their hardware and probably runs their appserver better too.
 
Well, they're a huge company, with a huge investment in Java, and the resources available to protect that investment. Like Kamper said, it may well run Java better on a specific IBM platform (not Windows). They can also fix their own bugs, without relying on Sun to judge what gets fixed when.

That said, I don't think the average user has a need to use anything but Sun's JRE.

In certain situations I have seen it blow sun out of the water (we're talking 30-40% doing hard crunching). Same with JRockit and that's on normal intel hardware with a non-ibm app server (JBoss).

That's not to say that you will necessarily notice a difference for everything. This was server performance and it's possible that we simply hit a weak spot in sun's jvm.
