Oh, I've turned off all manner of alerts except for PMs. There is some option to send you an email every time you get a reply...holy crap that would be awful (though I guess useful if you are selling junk)

It's useful if you want to follow threads and know about replies as soon as they're posted, without having to live in the forum. I've always used email alerts. Most forum software (not all) is smart enough to only send one email for the first reply to a thread until you visit again. You don't actually have to read the email, it's just a heads-up.
