Damn, just what we need, more twisted and convoluted reasons to excuse Dubya's little adventure in NeoCon Colonialism. Even to the extent of mischaracterizing Kay's remarks about the 1998 missile strikes- he said thse strikes destroyed the vestiges of Iraqi weapons manufacturing capability, not that there were any actual weapons there to be destroyed... which all sounds a lot like "weapons of mass destruction program related activities" to me- pure scaremongering and hyperbole. I have some bleach, and some ammonia, somewhere in the house, probably makes me guilty of the same thing...
"But Clinton!" should be the battle cry of the Bush apologists, they ought to adopt it as their campaign slogan in 2004. Clinton was wrong all along, as history and the utter lack of any real wmd activity in Iraq has vividly illustrated. That certainly doesn't excuse the lies and distortions used by his successor to invade, squandering whatever goodwill and sympathy we'd obtained in the wake of 9/11, not to mention the lives of US servicemen and an undisclosed number of Iraqis. But they're free, right? Free to do whatever we tell them kind of free....
Yeh, I remember who said what and when- I remember "we have proof!" and "we know where they are!" and the simple fact that both Clinton and Dubya demanded that the Iraqis prove a negative, which is impossible. Prove there aren't any faeries in Ireland, or that Sasquatch doesn't roam the Northwest, otherwise we'll invoke sanctions and invade after you've been brought to your knees...
What's this costing us so far? $200B and counting, over 500 dead Americans, 8-10K wounded, (blind, paralyzed, amputees, just plain shot to hell)- what about our self-respect, our sense of ourselves as a peace-loving people? Or do we need that in this new world vision of gunboat diplomacy, where might makes right?
