Turns out these guys did it (of course) but they kind of cheated by putting a ball of foil in it. 😛 Not as dangerous as I would have figured.

If you enjoy corporations profiting off exploiting your privacy then go ahead and install all these stupid apps. That CANNOT be compared to needing a license to drive. Though these days it seems you need a license and permits for practically everything and it's only getting worse. Driving is understandable because you don't just want some random person driving vehicles around on public roads, but then some places require a license for simply flying a drone, that's way too far.


I don't know why wanting more freedom in life is seen as a bad thing. People who don't like freedom and want the government to tell them what to do are weak minded and can't make smart decisions for themselves.

The powers that be have been trying to justify the elimination of cash for a long time for exactly this reason. They would like nothing more than to track where every cent we spend goes.

Yeah it seems everything is being designed to remove our privacy as much as possible and most people are oblivious to it. Like slowly boiling a frog. It's never enough either, they always go deeper and deeper. It's bad enough that phones as a whole are basically spy devices and there's not much alternatives but everything is requiring stupid apps for things that have no technical reason to, in order to spy even more. I think there will come a time where you won't even be able to shop anywhere without needing a phone.

To be clear, you don't need the app to buy gas; the pumps accept credit cards too. It's just another way to pay.

Well, since you are probably of the ilk that can't bypass buying a scratch off or lottery ticket at the convenience store, and enjoy paying more for your gas, fucking go for it. Of course your transactions must be in cash, else you are also surrendering your freedoms as your CC company tracks your purchases. And cover the license plate on your vehicle and wear your COVID mask, dark glasses and a hoodie to ensure your imaginary 'privacy'.

OBTW, if you think you have any privacy, I'd like to talk to you about an opportunity for some prime beach property in Kansas.

You are being extreme and ridiculous. While it might be hard to have 100% privacy it does not mean you just give up completely. Yeah credit card companies and banks have access to my transactions, but apps have access to everything I do on a 24/7 basis. They can listen to me, track my location, see my texts, phone calls, my internet browsing, try to scan my network for stuff that can be exploited (joke's on them though my wifi is on a separate vlan for that reason) etc... Apps are basically surrendering your life over to a corporation so they can mine as much data as possible from you. Discrete apps for simple things that should be doable without one are only there for one reason, and it's to act as a trojan horse.

And if you say "I have nothing to hide" that's like not caring about freedom of speech because you have nothing to say.

Dude let loose a little bit. Life is not that crazy. I'm pretty sure most people here feel similar.

I guess life is easy around here if you own a condo in this urban area at least. I don't need a permit for shit except street parking and driving and a car inspection every two years. I can do anything I want to the inside of my condo and honestly nobody is going to say shit in my building if I do. I have a driver's license. I don't hunt and I don't fish. I just enjoy the amenities of the area, go out and eat, drink, see music, art, ride my bike, hike, maybe the beach. Nobody asks me for ID unless I pick up a UPS package from a local shop that takes packages I wasn't home to get. I have to obey certain traffic laws. And now during Covid wear a mask in certain areas like mass transit. I feel pretty fucking free. I use Google Pay and certain apps to make my life easier like buying a bus or ferry ticket or paying for the subway using Omni (takes Google Pay) or sometimes when I want a spicy chicken sandwich from Popeye's I get deals on their mobile app. So far I haven't seen a scary looking Popeye's employee stalking me.

I wish privacy laws were better in the USA like in Europe for sure, and I'll support politicians that do as well, but I'm not going to pay for everything with cash so I'm untrackable. On a day to day basis, life is pretty free and good. I don't feel smothered by big brother yet. I'm a straight white dude doing ok in an area that the general mantra is be whoever the fuck you want - dress however, be normal, be weird, be into whatever it is you want to just as long as it doesn't fuck with other people. And odds are, you'll be able to find a group of people that like whatever normal or wacky shit you like. Feels pretty free to me.

No need to pay with cash, just don't willingly install malware on your devices. That's exactly what these apps are it's spyware. So many companies are pushing apps for things that should not even require a phone. The only reason is so they can use your phone against you by running in the background and collecting ever bit of info they can on your life. They will get way more info than what a simple credit card transaction will give, since they can run 24/7. Phones in general are quite terrible for privacy and the whole OS ecosystem sucks, but by installing every single app that's being pushed to you by companies you're putting yourself even more at risk.

I wish the Librem phone had taken off since I was eyeing it, but the project pretty much flopped. Seems people now days just don't care about privacy and are letting corporations walk all over them, it's sad really.

Clearly, you should move no further up the phone technology tree than the most basic flip phone, and without any data on your plan. Leave your credit cards at home in a small safe in a Faraday cage.

I have never used a phone to buy gas. And AFAIK you can't at Costco. I always pay there with their credit card.

Freedom is great stuff but unregulated populace filled with nincompoops and jerks is trouble. Of course, drones have to be regulated. Some real bad shit has happened because of drones. For instance, in an emergency situation when planes or helicopters are needed they can be grounded because of fools' drones.

My point was that Costco a requires a membership to buy gas, not that you can buy gas with your phone there.

In the Sam's vs. Costco debate, Sam's is hands down the winner in using technology to provide convenience, with the app with Scan & Go and gas purchases. Costco hands down winner for their check-out process/staffing.

AFAIK there are no Sam's around here, so can't compare. Also AFAIK there's nothing around here anything like Costco but Costco. Love 'em. Yes, you need membership. I don't think their Visa CC is required, but it really is nice:

Discount on all Costco purchases

3% cash back on approved travel expenses

3% cash back at restaurants

3% IIRC cash back on gas from other stations, although I rarely buy elsewhere.

I suppose there's a cash limit/month but I'm never affected.

For everything else I use my Citi Double Cash card unless it's covered by a Chase or Discover 5% quarterly categories promotion.
 
Remember when:

UPS, Fedex, etc. used to leave notes on your door saying they tried to deliver a package but you weren't home to sign. 3 attempts and the package would be returned to sender? I hated that!!!!! 😡

I guess maybe USPS and Amazon did that too.

I really dig how nowadays they send you emails telling you what day something's going to come and that something was just left at your door. Barcode technology has really revolutionized a lot of commerce.

We still get online notices from the USPS "package could not be delivered, no one home" when we actually watched the mailman drive past our drive. Lazy, forgetful, doesn't give a shit?
