Damn, you have wax?

I'm still stuck on cuneiform cylinder seals! That's how we recorded information in my day, and we liked it!

I had an 8track player in my work truck in the early 2000s. I put it in replacing an AM only radio. A DIGITAL AM radio mind you. Wrap your head around that. That's like a laser wax cylinder player :^D

Anyway, it was fun playing 8tracks, and I could get music for the truck for pennies.

The Little Cassette Deck That Changed the World: The Advent 201

The Advent 201 was the fist deck to include now omnipresent Dolby B noise reduction. The marriage of Ray Dolby's compression/expansion system with the cassette transport ushered in consumer music archiving

With the addition of Chromium Dioxide tape the Advent Model 201 was the first machine to allow (semi) high fidelity recording at an affordable price. It was the direct predecessor of the Sony Walkman.

Just think of it as an early model flash drive.

Dolby n/r decks were filtering out noices of Apple 2 programs. I had to grab the cheapest deck with no noise reduction to make the games load.

Problem was with the 8-track as soon as the lubrication started wearing off the other side of the tape it would play worse (as the tension caused it to stretch) until it's inevitable death. Then there was the switching of tracks in the middle of a song, then the head alignment was crappy at best, it was common to use a matchbook or Popsicle stick jammed under the tape to try and stop 2 tracks playing at the same time..

Ugh, I had the Commodore "datasette", programs could take up to 20 min. to load then you prayed the tape was in perfect condition, any tiny wrinkle or drop-out meant a bad load and the game wouldn't run, I finally bought a re-furbed 1541 for $149 and was happy..

There's a guy here in town who still repairs 8-tracks, cassette decks and VCRs. Some people buy a 1960-1970's muscle car, and they want the original audio, or they have so many VHS tapes that it's cheaper to get the occasional $50 repair instead of paying to port all the content to DVD.
