Now, thanks to the court order asking the district to preserve evidence on all school-issued computers, the family has discovered more than 400 photos of Blake alone, not to mention the "thousands" more taken of other students
Haha. I remember I argued that it was ok because it was to capture whoever was using the computer for things against the ToS (porn), but this is just creepy. If he was looking at porn 400 times you'd think the school would have said something after the first time, but no, I guess we'll just take 400 pictures of him jacking off instead of the 1. That is so creepy.

how would using the laptops camera to take pictures of a kid using/surfing have anything at all to do with seeing what he is surfing? screen captures sure i can see that, even packet captures if they are on the schools network. but not pictures

This. I don't get why this has to resort to lawsuits. The law system is what needs to come into play here. Lawsuits are just a quick way for people to milk thousands of free dollars out of something bad that someone did. The law system needs to punish bad deeds, not lawsuits.

The law system IS at play here. They aren't suing because someone did a bad deed. That's an entirely separate matter.

These people are suing because they believe they were injured by the actions of the school. I'm not saying I would agree with them, just saying that is the premise of the lawsuit. Car accidents, equipment failures, negligence, or even faulty products all result in injuries, and most of the time none of these involve a criminal act. There has to be a way for the injured party to be recompensed. In early American history you grabbed your kinfolk and your shotguns and paid a visit to the offending party. This is why we came up with the "civil" law system.

Sure the system is abused. Name one system in America or likely any country in the world that is not abused.

fundamental issue is that student laptops is a massive waste of tax payer money.

Wow, this family is going to get tens if not hundreds of millions for all this.

The community should outright demand that any and all administration should be removed and replaced.

:D No, that's not going to happen.

I don't know. Such egregious rights violations normally come with big price tags. I could see 1 million. The court is going to have to make an example out of this school.
