OH LORD! Really..memories..

Ghostbusters
Elite <----- back then THE best game ever
Frankie goes to Hollywood
Little Computer People (this was one crappy game really...)
Hackers
Super Huey (Heli Sim)
Witch Cauldron (super frustrating platformer)
Koronis Rift/Rescue on Fractalus
The Summer Games series
Skyfox (I never liked that one really)

The "best" about the C64 wasn't even so much to buy commercial games, but that you bought magazines and typed-in some games which had been printed in the magazines in BASIC...or machine code. Looking back at it, it sounds like total insanity but this is what I did often.

I think my FIRST game ever that I typed in and then played on the C64 was some "moon lander" type game....and I also totally remember my first "real" game that I bought, it was "Paccacuda", a PacMan clone. Anyone remember the really, really super-old C64 games, like "Aztec Challenge"?

Used to buy a British magazine called zzap64 that always had tapes full of demos, at the end they even had cd's (no idea how that worked though)

I never used a Commodore 64 but I remember going to the UW Engineering Expo back in the '80s and just about every automation/robotics project on display was driven by one.

i would say Elite first, then Space Rogue; Space Rogue was really revolutionary, i cannot believe how undervalued it is. Also Wasteland, Phantasie III, Bards Tale 2, the various AD&D games, Paradroid, Civilization 1 & 2, Defender Of The Crown, Dungeon Master, ermm.. thats it.

There's a C64 sitting in the next room but it doesn't belong to me. During that era I used an Atari 130XE and my favorite game was F15 Strike Eagle.

Haha. Forgot about Elite. HUGE time waster for me well. I remember getting the beam lasers and thought I was on top of the world...

Best computer gaming system EVER. So many great games. I wish I still had mind - would take it over the top of the line Intel or AMD systems today.

What were some of your favorite games? I played so many - so many jems!

OP Send me your top of the line Intel based rig and I'll hustle up a C64 for you

They do have emulators out there if you want to relive the fun. I loved playing Boulderdash, BC's Quest for Tires and Grog's Revenge (that green slime thing used to freak me out as a kid), Choplifter, etc.

You think your Commodore 64 is really neat-o. What kinda chip you got in there, a Dorito?

You have to keep in mind it was released in '83, there were no fast machines back then and at $300 it was a good deal. Also since so many were out there software developers tended to make quality games for it.

The C64 was awesome when it came out. It had 64K memory and actually had a real keyboard with actual keys. Back then, the competition usually had far less memory...and only fake rubber-type keys. Think about Sinclair Spectrum etc. Although the built-in BASIC was "shitty" and very rudimentary and maybe the C64 wasn't even "technically" the best, compared to other home computers which came a little later, it really didn't matter since there was so much support for the C64.

Yes, there were better computers, but not many. For example the BBC Micro was actually really good but didn't become popular beyond the UK and probably not all in the US. The C64 was not "flashy" in any sense, it was like a VW Beetle (and it almost sorta looked like one :) ) where you knew it will serve you reliably for many years.

ZOMG - HHGG - I NEVER got out of the starting bedroom, LOL. HHGG was my ONLY game I believe on the C64 I never finished (or got off home plate, LOL). If ya finished it (w/o reading ahead or cheating) - my hats off to you! Loved to INFOCOM games - was just too cerebral for me during my young ages...
