Old threads: here and here.
I noticed that everyone with the same issues also had the hpt370 RAID controller. Psycholohic was correct - it was a hardware issue all along. I tried moving my HD to IDE (no raid), but it still happened.
Then I got a great idea. I disabled the hpt controller all together! I have now been using XP for 3 days with about 10 reboots and everything is fine. Wow.
Epox has updated drivers for the RAID controller on their FTP site, but it was down last time I checked. I'm going to download and install those drivers at a later time (after ghosting my HD!).
So, it seems that the presence of the controller was enough to make XP freak out. Crazyness.
