Remember life before forums? When everyone would do their work and not waste time. Ahh those were the days.

Actually I would say, remember life before Fusetalk and Invision boards? Forums looked so bad, and were so boring.

I'm out to do some work

I don't have a cell phone, and when I get one, the only people getting the number are going to be

1) SO
2) Any servers I happen to administrate. If one of your buddies goes down, call me plzkthx.

Humans at work won't get it - family won't get it - friends won't get it. Solely another tool - somthing to plug the laptop into when I need wireless communication over a semi-secure network, or somthing to tell me when I can rack up MAJOR bonus points with the boss, or to help me rack up bonus points with teh chixx0r.

Otherwise, if I need to talk to you, I'll call you.

I think it's funny to listen to the people over at HowardForums talk about cell phones. The Verizon users are all upset that they're not going to sell analog-capable phones anymore, citing a lot of concern that their phone might not work out in really remote areas. What would they have done 10 years ago? It's like the world is going to end if they can't make a phone call in the middle of nowhere. I've got a cell phone, and about half the time I leave it on my desk on purpose. I hate how everyone blabs on them everywhere, all the time, talking about absolutely NOTHING. There have been maybe 5 times ever that it would have been a huge deal if I wasn't carrying one. Don't even get me started on this BS about high school kids carrying them to prevent the next Columbine, that's just stupid.

I left my cellphone at home accidentally the other day. On 3 occasions I realized I really wanted it.

Most days I'm home all day but need it at least once when I go pick up my other half at the station... it's cold so I'm not going to tell her to wait outside for me - so I need to call her when I arrive. Helps then too.

I'm sure we'd make it fine without a cellphone, but for $1/day, it's a nice convenience. If you don't want to be reached, you could just keep it off until you need to use it.

Yeah, but I didn't work a job that needed people to get ahold of me then. I didn't even bother to get a cell phone until the later half of the 90's. I suppose if it wasn't for work I wouldn't really need a cell phone. It is handy to have though.

sheesh son, I remember being on a party line. Three families all shared the same line.

Me too, I remember when touch tone phones were a big deal & my parents being concerned that the phone company would cause trouble for them when I added a 2nd extension in their house without permission.

Remember when giving your office number was a must, and even email was a pretty handy form of communication.
If you were out doing something, nobody could get in touch with you until you got home to check your messages.

Now people say "what if my car breaks down, what will i do without a phone?"

I remember going down the street without hearing '....oooh OMG.. it's like geezz hi2 you 2.... like ... like....'

The world worked just fine. Cell phones are a created need. Of course they are really handy but not really needed.

I like that last line

i was shooting for before pagers too.
But hey, its a start.

I've lived 47 years without either pagers or cell phones. I like being unreachable.
