I played Imperialism 2 again a while back and I pretty much played it to the bone. Unfortunately it wasnt designed to be played for too long because the tech tree dies out after about 150-200 years and after that the game sort of collapses under the weight of itself. Can anyone recommend a game very similar to Imperialism that I can play? Developers arent exactly favouring games that require any thought whatsoever anymore and therefore strategy games seem to suck as of late. What about the Europa Universalis series, I seem to remember that being pretty decent...

The Europa Universalis series received good ratings from IGN.com. Score was 9.0 for both I and II.

oh, i read yours...rome total war is a new game that is pretty similar, but without the more complex economics/trading of different resources. you just build buildings in each city that give certain benefits and it automates trade and taxes etc. the battles are a definite improvement over imperialism

Hmm, Yes I was thinking of trying out that game. I played Medieval: Total War a bit and it was pretty fun. The battles in Imperialism were to say the least, a bit weak. Although I'm not totally worried about battles being fun (because Imperialism's battles system although weak was good enough for me) it would be a nice bonus.

Imperialism was a bit of a surprise. A low-key, visually stylish economic and military conquest game, it didn't have much flash, but it had good gameplay in the Civilization/Railroad Tycoon mold.

I think you should pick up some Civ3 & the Conquests expansion. :)
