Some of the graphics mods for Quake are still actively updated.

Qrack is another good one -- makes Quake look like the art style used in Borderlands.

Notice how it stutters when there's a flash of light? Yeah, I hate that. I have to tinker with settings a bit to make it work well. The guy who recorded that also clearly has the brightness or gamma very high, as well, so it could easily look a little bit better. It also won't work with water in many maps, too. Best to keep Fitzquake around, for some mods.

Remember it? I still keep Quake + engines + mods at the ready.

That version (Dark Places) can look much better than the video by using Rygel’s ultra texture pack along with the Reforged monster skins.

That’s the version I run and I’ve actually just finished both Quake expansion packs back-to-back recently.

Thanks for the update. I didn't know about the Reforged project. Glad to see they will provide a *.PK3 file with all the updates when the project is complete.

Quake was the first multi player online game I played. My work mates and I would "work late" a couple times a week so we could play on a T1 line versus 56k at home :) Loved that game.

This reminds me perfectly of what I like to think as the "Drink Me" syndrome. The dimensions of the halls and doorways are immense compared to your character. I always found it strange when I would be walking down a corridor large enough to drive a bus through. I think they even did this with Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

First PC game I ever played back in 1996. Looked great back then and that mod looks pretty darn good too.

Yea, I remember Quake, I played it pretty hardcore for about a year,,,, maybe up to 18 months. I even made a 5 hour drive to Quakecon in 1998 and 1999. While I was at the 1998 quakecon, John Romero autographed a screen shot of Quake II for me -which I found ironic because John left ID software when they started developing QII.

I am glad to see that the original Quake is still be supported by the modding community, the improved graphics look great. They look a lot better then they did back in 1996.

That video is seizure inducing. *sigh*

By the way, that's not Quake. That's modded/custom maps. That isn't remotely what quake looked like.

I have disagree - if you take an old Ford Mustang, put new rims on it, and give it a new paint job, its still a Mustang.

Even though the textures do not look "exactly" like the original quake, they still reflect what Quake was about. If you look at the textures from Quake E4M3 and E4M4 (couple of my favorite Quake maps), they look like the ones in the video. Just the textures in the video look better.

I remember the first time I ever saw it. It was around 1:00 am or so in the mid-90's and a friend was playing it in a lab office. I was just blown away by it.
