i have had lower back pain for a few weeks
it gets bad when i sleep on my stomach, if i stay on my side or back , it doesn't hurt too much

i think it is just part of getting old

unless you actually did something to it. were in a car accident recently? did you fall off a ladder?

Aleve. Massage. Proper support. No sex (seriously). Rest.

Ice the first time for swelling. All other time Heat is best. Maybe some icyhot/bengay before bed, but not too much or you will die. :)

One of the thermal packs that heat up and you can stick to your back. The only thing that ever works for me.

haha

ok, you have to list some symptoms and explain the pain and whatnot. it could be anything from myofascial pain syndrome to lytic mets...

when did it start? does it hurt at certain times during the day? what makes it better? what makes it worse? did you do anything to cause it? do you have a fever? have you lost a lot of weight recently? do you have frequent urination? how old are you? do you have any testicular/groin pain? what kind of pain is it (sharp, dull, achy, shooting, etc)? on a scale of 1-10 (1 = no pain, 10 = passing out from the pain), where would this rank? where in your low back is the pain located? are you a smoker? do you have bad eating habits? are you overweight?

bph (benign prostatic hyperplasia) or prostate cancer. both can cause low back pain and both can cause frequent urination. if you have it mainly at night (pain), that's a red flag for cancer.

When I start getting lower back pain, I just start doing some physio ball crunches. I do 5 sets of 20. For me it alleviates the pain for some reason. One of these days I'll probably screw my back over real good by doing it, but it works for me.

it depends... most people get low back pain because of hypertonic iliopsoas muscles from sitting too long. so, if you do crunches in a seated position, you could just be making the problem worse. what you'd need to do is either manipulative therapy to stretch out the iliopsoas muscles or you'd have to learn how to stretch them yourself. something you should know before you pick which stretch technique you want, if you actually do have tight iliopsoas muscles, is if you have lumbar facet syndrome or not. lots of people have it and don't even realize it because they just think it's normal back pain from aging or something.

work out your hamstrings, too. if you're feeling long-lasting pain relief from the crunches, chances are that your pelvis was rocked forward and doing the crunches is making go to a more neutral position (because of the tension placed on the pelvis from the abdominal muscles at the attachment). strengthening your hamstrings will help keep it in place.

Hey, cool... I went to a chiro a couple years ago and he said the same. He said to sit on the end of the bed or a chair and put my foot up on my opposite knee. Then lean forward gently and you can feel the stretch in the hamstring. That one feels great! I've only been to a chiro a few times so it is good to hear similar advice! Thanks

I'm 27 and I do sit a lot.

No accidents and I can't think of any injuries or anything. This happens every so often where I'll justw ake up and my lower back is in extreme pain. It hurts to walk and even stand. I almost feel like I'll fall over, thats how much it hurts. It usually lasts for about 2-3 days then goes away.

usually hurts bad in the morning and then gets better towards the afternoon/evening. I don't recall it hurting yesterday but last night, after laying in bed for a little bit and then getting up, it hurt like a bitch again.

It almost seems like its my bed that is causing it but I don't know for sure. It started about a week ago i guess.

I don't have frequent urination, I haven't lost weight, although I wish i had, pain is only in my lower back, its a dull pain when i'm sitting or not moving but a sharp almost crippling pain when i stand up or walk sometimes, i don't smoke, i am overweight, probably do have bad eating habits hence being overweight, no fever, i've taken aleve, nothing seems to make it better short of not moving, most of the time it hurts when i walk or when i'm standing.

never had a prostate exam, i don't think my family has a history of cancer.

don't listen to all the people telling you to take aleve or advil or whatever. all that might do is mask the symptom... it won't help fix the problem at all. people tend to just pop a pill to lessen the pain and completely ignore the problem... and then, continue injuring it even more because they don't think about it because the pain isn't there as much.

i think you should go get checked out by a chiropractor. you should also try eating more healthy foods and exercising more in order to lose weight... your weight is complicating the low back problems you've got... especially if you carry more of your weight in the front. another complicating factor is that you probably have tight iliopsoas muscles and facet syndrome, like i mentioned above. to stretch the muscles out, lie on your back on the edge of your bed and let the leg closest to the edge hang down while you hold onto the opposite knee and pull it to your chest. have someone push down on the leg hanging down. don't do any iliopsoas stretches that would involve arching your back... it might make your facet syndrome (if you have it) painful.

how do you sleep, on your side, stomach, or back? try sleeping on your back for a while. if you have to sleep on your side, sleep with a pillow between your legs. if you have to sleep on your stomach, sleep with a pillow under your lower abdomen.

whenever you start feeling pain in your low back, ice it. don't put heat on it. go see the chiropractor.

i tend to roll around a lot in bed. i'll go from side to back to stomach. i mainly sleep on my side or back though.

Kidney stones can manifest as lower back pain initially as well. Is it on one side only?

based on what he's said, it doesn't seem like he'd have a kidney stone... MAYBE a kidney infection, but doubtful.
