Remeber when the internet was slow?

It used to be that downloading a single MP3 took about 20 minutes. If you wanted to download an entire ISO of a CD, it took, quite literaly, days. That was less than 10 years ago. Now I just finished downlaoding a complete 617mb ISO in under 40 minutes. I wonder what kind of speed residential internet connections will have in another 8 years or so?

Lol people are still so forgetful of the people who sit in the rural areas with the same slow internet they say has disappeared. Ive been off of dialup for 2 years. Replaced it with 1500ms latency, 170MB dl cap per day, dropped signal, 920kbps down, 18kbps up, $60 a month satellite internet. Thats not what i consider an improvement, but you simply cant run 2 comps simultaneously on dialup. Everyone else in my area is still on 28.8kbps dialup (in reality 16.4kbps). DSL from ONE company will be here finally in September (I suppose Bellsouth is the only company who decided the 30 mile fiber run from the nearest city was worth it). But believe me ive waited a loooooooooooooooong time.

it takes you 3 mins to transfer 617 megs?

I transfer 1.80 gigs in less than 3 mins.

I hate you 🙁
<-- dialup

THE innernet was never slow see; y'all just had tiny pipes. Akin to sippin' the ocean with a tiny tiny straw or a cap tube making your face turn red. Yeah those faces got red trying to download all those rars of photoshop 4.0 featuring mmx technology.

Cheerios!

I remember when you were encouraged to do bandwidth-intensive stuff at night.

And when people got pissed about excessively large e-mails/usenet posts (i.e. quoting text that didn't need to be quoted)

i rememeber the day upgrading my computer from 33.6k to 56k, what improvement that was. That used to be fast, until websites started to get more graphic intense, Now i love my comcast 6mbps. Going over to my dad house, and using his dsl sbc 1.5mbps is slow to me somewhat. lol

at the rate we're going, I wouldn't be surprised if 100 mbit connections were pretty readily available in urban areas within 5 years, with the top ones getting near the 500 mbit range. Granted, I have absolutely nothing to back that up, but I know things are in the works, and gigabit lan is being included in many, if not most new motherboards these days. It sure would be nice to be able to download

100 mbit = 81 seconds/gig
500 mbit = 16 seconds/gig 🙂

of course that's ideal... I would guess max actual throughput on a 100mbit would be more like 60 mbit - nothing to shake a stick at.

These be exciting times in the bandwidth department. Just think of the types of content we might be able to get in real time given those speeds...

I remember downloading the Witchhaven demo on my 14.4 modem... and while I was waiting, I watched the Star Wars trilogy. I think it was about 15MB.

it still is slow. WE NEED FIBER

i took me a freakin hour to download a 1.2gb .ts file. 🙁🙁🙁

I rememeber when I tried to play a flash game in 95... took 20 minutes to load, and that was on "high speed"! 😛

I remember getting my first internet dialup account from a local ISP.

$18/mo for 350 hours

All I used it for was PINE (email), IRC and Gopher.

My first "internet" connection was through a 2400 baud modem dialing in to a local BBS. I was also the envy of the other geeks because most of them were still on 900/1200 baud modems.

Same, although 14.4 modems had come out when I had my 2400 baud. They were literally like 120$ though.

Heh, I don't remember seeing a 14.4 until I got to college. My 2400 baud modem was connected to my C=128. 🙂
