I would guess that any bones found would still have some bit of DNA left in them somewhere; I'm pretty sure that's how they'll eventually identify them positively. Perhaps now at least one family will have something of their loved ones to bury and begin to come to closure with...

I bet the shuttle weathered most of the atmosphere and still protected the astronauts from being disintegrated until it finally peeled away... like an ice cube in hot water. By the time they hit the ground, all that was left were random parts.
