Has anyone negotiated relocation packages?

I haven't been hired yet, but if I am, I would be moving across the state with a wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs. I would have to sell my house in san antonio. the market isn't terrible, but not wonderful.

I know most big companies have standard relo packages - but i know they can vary widely.

care to share your experiences?

Where are you moving to Rob? I don't have any suggestions on the relocation, but SA's housing market seems to be in a slump :(

Nah, leave your wife & kids home... most relocation packages come with new wives and children, you just need to ask for it. :)

One of my ex-coworker's relo package included the company buying her house from her for FMV if the house didn't sell in 6 months.

We give our VPs $50k relo (all inclusive, 3 months of corp housing, moving, etc, use or lose)

We give senior level hires $15k relo

Low level hires get $2k signing bonus in lieu of relo

Another co-worker that is going to Microsoft is getting put up at a hotel as he still works here until he makes the final move to Seattle (he's already moved out of his apt), and gets put up in corporate housing in Seattle for 2 weeks.

If you're a manager or higher up then you may be able to get them to buy your house which would help greatly in this market. In case you're not be aware that you may have to have 2 house payments for several months and be prepared for the extra expense.

I would be looking for several thousand dollars in compensation because the move itself will probably run a couple thousand and that's if you sell your house right away and don't have any major issues.

what do you mean by experiences? experiences in negociating the relocation?

we have a standard relocation package for all salaried employees ... the criteria is *supposed* to be >800 miles but i got it for moving 200 miles ... its a generous package from a large (80k employee) firm

our comp pays relo + closing costs + signing bonus sometimes.

i did turn down a job with a comp that would buy my house for me - that would have been great - BUT, it was a local comp anyway :p

I'm itching to make a move - my brother is in Dallas, another in Shreveport + the in-laws in Arkansas, so we'd be much closer to all of them - and international travel may be required for this comp which would be cool (for awhile anyway).

well, i guess i'll just have to wait and see what happens.

ours does this:

1 week of all "house-hunting" expenses: realtor, food, hotel, whatever
all expense day before, during, after move: hotel, food, gas, flight, whatever
actual moving: full service professional movers for house & car
job placement service for spouse
if you sell/buy a house, they'll take care of all comissions/agent fees
if you sell a house under appraised value, they'll pay the difference
if, instead of buying, you decide to rent, you get 4 months of pay , distributed over 36 months, as rent-assistance (ie 20k / 36 = 555$/month)
lump sum bonuses: 1*month pay if youre out of school. 3*month pay if youre already employed
