Religious Thread Question

I realize that ATOT isn't the place to learn the deeper truths concerning Life, the Universe and Everything. But, it does seem to be a neat place to learn about human nature.

In this case, when a religion thread pops up, you get people yelling "NART, NART..." and others who visit just to crap all over the place.

Why do people who don't believe in God care enough to try to disrupt the conversations of people who do believe in God?

It seems to me that some of you might be struggling with your disbelief. It's like the guy who's just a little too vocal in putting down homosexuals. You know he's struggling.

Personally I don't know if there is a God or not. Daddy told me there was, and he has never told me something that isn't true. I guess I'm interested because I've decided that church might do me some good, and wonder about all you guys who are just a bit too hostile.

The biggest problem is that the religous threads have been done to death and then there is always someone who has to start another. Why would you bother starting a thread like this one when you know that it will generate flame wars?

Done to death. And then done over again.

Every possibly conversation about religeon has already been had. And yet they still constantly clog the flow of more important things.

I don't understand it either. If you don't want to see another religion thread, don't visit the thread. Simple solution that, but people still come in and say "repost" or "NART". I think they're either intrigued by religion of just neffing to get their post count up, which is a meaningless pursuit IMHO.

i don't think the people yelling NART are doing so because they necessarily disagree with you. it's just that, as stated by others, anything that can be said about the matter, has probably already been said in previous threads. it is like a windows versus mac debate, or nature versus nurture (in regards to gays) debate.

if you decide church is good for you, great. i'm atheist, but i think church IS good for some people. just don't get freaky and knock on my door :D

Because most of the time religion threads are only created for the sake of the flame fest that is soon to follow. If someone puts up a serious question on a specific area of religion most of us are considerate about it. But a "God is dead!" or "Catholicism is crap!" thread is another story entirely.

Hi polgara:

Well, a little history helps here. "The Off Topic Forum" was created specifically because of religious wars that were breaking out in the General Hardware Forum. From what I understand, Harvey and Netopia were the key protagonists, but that is a little before my time. Since this is a computer hardware site, Anand decided to set up a place where other topics (like religion) could be addressed. That is why Off Topic is advertised as:

<< A public meeting place, a Pub, if you will... A place for computer junkies to boldly post Off Topic... Things you might want to tell everyone... Or things you wouldn't say to anyone else. >>

Like any pub, certain topics will always be discussed: religion, politics, cars, and women. Of course, in a hardware site, computers will also be a hot topic. But here, with the history, religion is especially a topic that pushes some people's buttons. While I don't recall that I have ever started a specifically religious thread, I participate in a lot of them, and I don't see the big deal. Its not like anyone is forced to listen to a conversation they don't want to hear.

Plus, there is always the "newbie" who is exploring these issues in a new way or for the first time.

hmmm, this seems like the wrong time for this considering the last 2 or 3 religious threads have been pretty good.

Simply put: My beliefs are that they are my beliefs and I really don't need to express that idea with anyone else or have others try to alter my beliefs.

You are right on both counts there. :)

<< In this case, when a religion thread pops up, you get people yelling "NART, NART..." and others who visit just to crap all over the place. >>

This is mostly due to the fact that everyone is entitled to their opinion. That is why it is called the "Off Topic" forum. Everyone has their own set of beliefs. When one person starts a thread stating their beliefs are more sacred OR stating that other beliefs are fake, that is when the flame war ensues. To denounce others beliefs or state your beliefs are absolute will cause this.

<< Why do people who don't believe in God care enough to try to disrupt the conversations of people who do believe in God? >>

This goes both ways. To state it like that means you are just as biased.

<< Personally I don't know if there is a God or not. Daddy told me there was, and he has never told me something that isn't true. I guess I'm interested because I've decided that church might do me some good, and wonder about all you guys who are just a bit too hostile. >>

Thats great! You are entitled to your beliefs. If you believe there is a god, then all power to you. There isn't anything wrong with that. However, everyone must learn to be more religiously tolerant. Maybe you should work on that. Everyone can improve a little. :)

I hope your daddy didn't tell you there was a Santa Claus. If so I have some bad news...

Gonad,
Actually, he didn't. He did not believe in telling his children lies. We did not do Santa Clause, the tooth fairy, or Easter bunny. He wasn't really religious, but he was very honest.
