Religion question

I was watching a show last night, some kind of "wife swap" show, two mothers go and live with each other's family for a couple of weeks, hilarity ensues. Anyway, a big part of this show dealt with the fact that one woman was Jewish, and the other was Christian. The Jewish woman went to the Christian house, and the Christian family wanted her to go to a bible study class or something (which she did for a short time, but it was apparently distasteful to her as she walked out before it was over). They also asked her if she would go to church with them, she refused. At one point, the Christian father said something like "we both pray to the same god", making the point that she should have gone to his church.

OK, now I'm agnostic, I don't believe in any gods, and I have no problem with people who do, but because I don't come from a religious background, I don't understand a lot of religious practices. My question is, if the Christian and the Jewish religion pray to the same god, then why couldn't the Jewish woman go to the Christian man's church? I guess I'm asking what is the difference in the belief system between Jews and Christians.

Christians believe that Jesus was the son of God. Jews don't.

Edit: Basically, they both have the Old Testament in common. However, the New Testament, which focuses on Jesus' life and teachings, is only a part of Christianity.

Oh, that was easy. I guess I understand why she was uncomfortable at the bible class.

Does the Jewish faith believe there was a Jesus and he was just a normal guy, or do they not believe there was a Jesus at all?

So why didn't it work the OTHER way? If he really believed his own words he should ALSO go to HER church.

Clearly it aint the same god. 😛

They believe Jesus was a profit at most. Christians are waiting for the second coming of Christ while Jews are still waiting for his first apprearance.

Jews do believe that there was a Jesus, just that he wasn't the Messiah. Jesus was a Jew himself, after all.

Interesting, that pretty much cuts out the whole "Jesus dies for your sins" part of Christianity, which as I understand it is a huge part of that religion. Thanks for the answers, WhiteKnight.

Actually, he offered to go to her tabernackle (sp?) if she would go to his church.

So she wouldn't . . . .

the jews have a pretty strong taboo against mixing with gentiles (especially re: religion)
(they are not known for their tolerance having a long history of genociding their neighbors) 😛

LOL! Never thought of it that way, but so true!

Synagogue, not Tabernacle.
That christian family was creepy... like a real-live version of the Flanderses.

They believe Jesus was a prophet at most. Christians are waiting for the second coming of Christ while Jews are still waiting for his first apprearance.

Fixed.

The fundamental belief in most religions is that theirs is the one true religion. If religious people were to go to other faith churches, it is kind of like an acceptence of another religion, which totally negates all their beliefs.

🙂

watch the passion of the christ, and you will know, or you can watch the south park about it, either way.

Wow, I was thinking the same thing. The mother was pretty Flanderized, I don't think I could handle that.

I'd rather not, from what I've heard, to non-religious folks, it's just a snuff film, not really into that kind of thing myself. It brings up another question though. If the Jewish faith does not believe that Jesus is the son of God, why the big uproar when Passion of the Christ came out? BTW, if I'm offending anyone with these questions, it is not my intention.

MAny Jewish leaders were against The Passion because they feared it would spawn anti semetism... cause the Jews killed Christ.

Right - the Tabernacle is what is placed next to the altar to hold any communion that wasn't used...that would have been an interesting show to watch...yesedoodly 🙂

That'd be an atheist. Agnostic is the belief that it's impossible to know whether or not there is a god or gods. Essentially, a good way to avoid picking sides or thinking about it too much.
