Reliable Motherboard

I have a nonfunctional computer minus a motherboard. The machine started giving me headaches a bit ago, and the replacement motherboard wasn't even posting, and I kind of left it there. Now I'm ready to build it from scratch and get it going again, starting with the motherboard, and take it from there. I have an AMD|1700+ 1.4 ATHLONXP TBRED% CPU, but if need be, I can get a new processor that has a good track record with the new motherboard.

So, I'm basically looking for a motherboard reliable enough, as a starter, to rule out as the source of problem as I'm trying to find out where it went wrong. If you have any recommendation, I'd appreciate it very much.

Go back to Newegg and look over the line of Socket A boards by ASROCK. ASROCK is supposedly the value line of boards by ASUS.

Gigabyte motherboards are known as one of the most stable and reliable motherboards out there. While they might not be the best board for a hardcore overclocker, they are one of the best when it comes to running a CPU at stock settings.

Newegg has a number of these boards available, just pick the one with the options you like.
 
If you're looking for a good bang for the buck combo, IMO it's hard to beat a good Nforce2 clocking board + mobile XP athlon. If you choose a board that's good for 200 fsb you're almost guaranteed 2.2ghz anymore. Should be able to find one for under $150.

Ive had good experiences with the Shuttle AN35N Ultra. It's a value based board that doesn't have all the frills of the high end boards. They retail around $55. Add a $70 mobile XP and you're good to go 🙂

Of course that's assuming you have RAM for 200fsb, but even if you're on lower speed DDR I'd still reccomend it.
 
don't get the asus sli, it's not worth the possible headaches. If your going nforce 4 try the chaintech one. OC's well, more reliable from hearsay and about $100 less.
 
if your not going top of the line though, there's the AMD 64 2800+($165) route with a soltec nforce 3($75-80). he's running at 2.3 ghz and it was an easy overclock. If you dont want to go quite that high you could go with the Barton AMD 2500+ or 2600+(<$100) and an asrock.

whatever you get make sure you checkout newegg.com's reviews, and chances are if it's a good product and your gonna buy, they have it cheap!

There are lots of varyiing opinions, I've read up alot trying to decide on which mobo is the best bang for the buck, and i've finally narrowed it down to one simple piece of wisdom.

tHATS right!!! get a range of good choices, MSI, ASUS, ABIT etc....and go for the pretty one!!! everytime you look at it, you'll thank me for the words of wisdom!
