Reliable modem and router recommendations for Comcast internet please

Looking at getting a new cable modem and a router for my Comcast internet.. I have been using a Comcast provided gateway-combo for 2 years. It never had a problem, so I did not mind the monthly fee, as reliability is what I want most, and with no problem, and with the ability to exchange it with Comcast I had peace of mind with it. It has an Ethernet port going out on it, and I use all 4 Ethernet ports, so I am thinking I will buy a modem and router.

I only use one wireless device - I try to use Ethernet whenever I can and have a switch and about 6 devices on Ethernet, and again only one wireless device. SO while I want good wireless, it is not high on my list of wants. The most import things to me are reliability and good throughput on the Ethernet ports. I would like good wireless, but the first two things are more important.

On modem: I am thinking Motorola SB6141 modem and Netgear 4300 router. I was thinking Zoom 5341J but read too many reports about it running very hot and rebooting. SB6141 has good reliability reports from reviews I have seen.

On router: I was thinking an Asus N66, but I have read many reports of it running extremely hot, and I do not really need its wireless capability over the $30 less Netgear 4300 but I cannot find many reviews on the Netgear 4300.

Are the Netgear 4300 and Motorola SB6141 solid and reliability or do you suggest any other modem or router to fit what I need.

Thanks for any help.

the moto is solid, netgear is generally considered low end trash if it works for you great, but don't expect it to.

The trick on the moto 6141 is it supports 8 downstream channels depending on what comcast speed you are subscribing too this may be overkill, but if your not needing a cheaper modem then its fine. Oh and don't be surprised if it starts calling itself an arris device at some point, moto got bought by google due to a patent infringement lawsuit war between the two but google only wanted the wireless division not the whole thing so they sold the cable portion to arris who is long time cable product makes but more for MSO's than the public.

The Netgear, while not the most expensive router, will probably be just fine for your needs.

Thanks, but confused: Is the Netgear trash (first response) or okay (second)?

WHat router under $130 would you recommend. It seems the Asus N66 has high ratings but many state it runs super hot, so questionable how long it will last,

The Asus RT-N66U does not run hot for me. It comes with a stand. I use the stand rather than laying it flat. That exposes the largest amount of surfaces to air circulation, and gives the best cooling.

Current Temperature: 52 °C
Ambient: 23C/72F.

I run Merlin's firmware. http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=7846

I've got the DOCSIS 3.0 Moto Modem and it works great, router is linksys/cisco and have had zero issues with it in a year of service.

most people consider them trash but it depends on WHAT YOU NEED in a router.
