what's a reliable and not too expensive HD to get? i'm not obsessed about tiny differences in speed, i just want something that's quiet and most important of all reliable. i'm asking this just in case my abnormally noisy 75gxp drive dies I will know immediaely which drive to get

thanks

dighn,

In todays market, there is little to no difference. Most folks are brand specific stating they notice a difference immediately, I on the otherhand cannot. RPM speed is quite definite but between brands of the same RPM speed but just different brands names, I cannot tell.

I have used Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate, and IBM. And honestly could not really tell the difference, with the exception of the IBM, it was noisy as all hell.

My vote would be for Maxtor, Western Digital or Seagate! Good luck on your purchase 🙂

On the contrary to the preceding, I use IBM 60 GXP, WD and Maxtor but I find the IBM to be totally quiet. You can't even hear it even during boot time. But make sure you have a HDD cooler. They do run hot and have a tendency to die young without HDD cooler. No need for an expensive high capacity cooler. A simple single fan less noisy model will suffice. I've got mine at KD Computers at $9.00 each for the cooler.

i dunno, my 60GXP doesn't seem to run all that hot. neither is my maxtor 540dx. they both quiet, and pretty fast (judging the 540dx for file transfering.. it's the data drive).

But yeah, in today's market, it's all pretty evened out, altho IBM is the recent one to be hit w/ the RMA fiasco of the 75gxp (not that maxtor and WD haven't had theirs either...).

IBM 60 GXP is solid . . . don't listen to all the IBM dissers . . . mine is SO quiet. The 75 GXP HDs have lots of problems, but the 60 GXPs are solid.

I replaced a WD 13.2 5400 IBM with a 20 Gig Maxtor 7200 RPM. Runs just as quiet. I did this cause I had several problems with the WD ... even got it replaced with warranty then that thing wouldn't detect in my computer ... I sold it.
