Reliability of Notebook Security Cable?

I just got the Kensington Microsaver Cable for my new laptop. I found one site that said the cable was a POS (piece of s#!T). I'm wondering how reliable has a security cable been for you guys. Should I invest in some other kind of notebook security? Price can't be over 50 bux. Or if you have any anti-theft ideas, please share 'em. Thanks.

Well, from that site, it looks like the cable worked fine. The theif broke the corner of the laptop off. I believe thats really all these cable locks can do, which is drop the re-sell value of the laptop. Or maybe its just bad design of the apple notebook

Realistically they're only a deterrent from casual theft. Anyone with a cable cutter or willingness to break the case could steal it at will.

One more question. How safe is it to leave your laptop in your dorm room? I mean there's a chance my roommate might not close the door properly on his way out. Has this happened to any of you guys? Or to your friends?

Yeah, get one of those big 100 pound fire safes. They'll keep the notebook safe.🙂

Absolute.com

Check them out... they offer laptop tracking, that (unless you tell people) they won't even know it's on there... they have a 90% retrieval rate. And best part is that it's only $50/year...

Depends on the school, I'd say, as well as the size of the dorm...

i would probly not even let the lap get out of my sight. If i have to spend overnite in a friend's dorm, i probly sleep with it or NOT sleep at all.

I can't believe laptops are this much of a hassle to take care of =\. I think I'm going to make my roommate sign a contract that says whoever leaves the door open for thieves will pay for the losses.

think about it, IT professionals or even executives lose their laptops in conferences. During break, they grab a coffee, come back, it is gone..who took it?

Janitors, the lappy is easily concealed within a bunch of papers and folders.

I know it's sorta obvious, but keep this in mind...

If you get your laptop stolen, they will have all your data.. So I would strongly recommend an encrypted virtual drive of some sort.

Also, tracking software is probably the best bet... no one knows it's on there except you, and now adays everyone hooks up to the net.... it transmitts data to the fbi (only if lost) via wireless,ethernet,dialup....

You can't watch it 100% of the time....

Also, don't be a moron and go bragging about how your laptop was $5000000 and everyone else's sucks... Cause then you're just asking for it 🙁
