Relative newcomer to video cards seeks opinions

2x460gtx in SLI are 20-30% better than 480gtx and at a better price ~$460 for the 2x 460gtx's and $500 for the 480gtx

but I would wait to see what the AMD 6xxx series will bring in the upcoming weeks

Just wait for the AMD's 6000 series then you can decide.

Another vote for waiting for the 6000 series here. You'll have the choice to get an enthusiast level card, but with much better ergonomics (low-ish TDP, probably a lot less noisier and cooler than what you're planning to buy now). Unless you're loaded and think nothing of swapping high end cards every few months.

But if you insist on getting a card right now, better make it a gtx 480 instead of the 5970, since it's a much better bang for the buck.
