Do you think getting into arguments and working through them makes a relationship stronger or do you think memories of things said will hinder the relationship in the future?

Agreed. Arguments are fine. Fights aren't.
Argument = difference of opinions, usually positive result, angry makeup sex optional.
Fight = name-calling, usually negative, and you're on the couch for sure!

Then you back down, apologize for saying inappropriate things in the heat of anger, ask forgiveness for saying them. You have to take the first step on this, not wait or expect the other person to do so. Explain that you want to learn to argue without using accusatory words.
