Hi.

I've learned a few days ago that one of the XBOX 360's bundle will include a Component HD AV Cable.

Since I cannot stand 60 Hz televisions (even at 70 Hz), I told to myself that I'd wait for some sort of cable to play my XBOX 360 games on my PC Monitor.

My questions are as follows:

1) Would that Component HD AV Cable allow me to play games on my Monitor via my GPU ?

2) Do I absolutely and only need a VGA Adapter ?

3) If only a VGA Adapter could do that, then will I have to wait for an "official" one ? Or a compatible one ?

4) If a GPU allows such cables to be pluged in to transfer visual data onto the Monitor, then is a specific version of that GPU needed ? Such as ATi's All-In-Wonders ?

Thanks for your time and help.

I'll try to answer based on what I know...

1) No, no current video card has Component input so you'd have to connect it directly to your monitor
2) You'd need some sort of transcoder (that would sort of "translate" the signals to a VGA format, since YPbPr/Component isn't directly pin-compatible with VGA monitors, it's a somewhat different signal)
3) Any compatible transcoder should work
4) N/A, refer to #1

Your video card doesn't have video-in, so no you can't through your gpu. But it may be possible to go straight from xbox to monitor w/ the adapter, but we can't know for sure until it's out.

edit: dam, beaten to it

Ok thanks guys. I'll verify what's possible to do.

I want to play XBOX 360, but only on my PC Monitor. Not only the image and colors quality is better, but it's set at 100 Hz, which is what I can really stand for many hours non-stop if needed.

I've just checked on my Monitor (19" LG Flatron F900B), front and back, and there's nothing where I could plug in Component cables. There's two USB ports and that's it. So one thing is for sure, I couldn't directly plug the Console to my Monitor.

Yeah, very few PC monitors have Component inputs directly (although a few of the newer high end LCD's like the Dell 2405FPW are starting to show up with them). In any case, I'm not entirely sure but I think that the refresh rate is regulated by the source signal, not your monitor. I don't think an Xbox 360 is going to set a 100Hz refresh rate like your video card can, so you may still be limited to 60 since I assume that's what it would be outputting - I'm not aware of any HDTV standards above 60Hz. This wouldn't be a problem on an LCD, but, of course, it probably would on a CRT.

I see.

Argh ... not sure what to do.

I don't feel like waiting for XBOX 1080 by the time display technologies incorporates Component inputs as a standard to finally buy an aging XBOX 360 at $99.99 sometime in 2010.

I might just have to blow a pile of bucks for an HDTV within the next months.

Because I'm surely not gonna melt what's left from my eyes on an old curved-60 Hz television.

Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable
Showcase stunning Xbox 360 high-definition graphics on your PC monitor or HDTV using the VGA input.

Cool, didn't realize they were going to release an adapter like that...makes it alot easier for us PC folks without a big screen HDTV ;)

The refresh rate question still remains to be seen though - if the console is going to output a standard HDTV signal, the highest it would be is 60Hz, which will be a problem for CRT owners. Not sure how (or if) they're going to address that.

ALL HD formats are 60Hz ATSC, 50 Hz PAL HD...period. I doubt Xbox or any other console will output >60Hz. Just like X800 Crossfire!

60Hz refresh rate on a CRT is going to kill my eyes very quickly. Most plausible theory IMO is that the VGA cable is only intended to be used on LCD monitors. Or perhaps you can adjust the refresh rate on the Xbox360...
