It would also be nice to see alot more people get up off their collective lazy arses and actually do something for their great country which provides them with so much prosperity and opportunity. It's about time more people earn their keep and contribute more than carbon dioxide to the greater good.

What would you think, say, or do IF they reinstituted the draft tomorrow?

I think youre a tool. Hows that armor upgrade going on your hummer for your Iraq visit?

Bringing people into the service involuntarily certainly doesn't have the effect of convincing the public of the righteousness of war (as witnessed by Vietnam).
You are correct on one count, as I do fear the quality of servicemen that would be forced to serve; but our training is the best in the world, so any slackishness that is inherent in the general populace would be quickly fixed and overcome. We'll certainly weed out the weak, and take the strong over to see the truth firsthand!

The first time that they visit a remote village full of people happy to see them, they will then know the truth. And for me, that happened on my very first patrol.

Where were you deployed, and with what units?

For me (non military, but attached in a training/advising role) pretty much continuously deployed since mid 2004.

1st ID Tikrit
42nd ID Tikrit
MNFI Baghdad
101 AA Tikrit
I've spent 10 years with a mix of active duty and the Reserves/NG as an infantryman. I've taken two trips over to the ME in that time. 1995-1996 with the 82nd, to Israel and Egypt; and then 2004-2005 (14 months total) to Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Iraq with the 29th ID. (most of that time was in the Ghazni and Paktika provinces of Afghanistan.)

I will be headed back again next year in a new line of work.

Every hummer that I took on patrol was UA. (up-armored) Then again, no armor can really protect a hummer from double and triple-stacked AT mines... so what's your point?

Dont believe the hype!

I'll have to search for it but I remember hearing that something like .7% of the population at large has a relative serving in Iraq and 1% of congress has a relative serving in Iraq.

But now we're into a whole other thread... ;)

1% while they try to convince you how special this war is.. seems like a lack of support :D -- yes.. *off topic from OP.. sorry

But more support than the population at large. ;)

Like I said, I have nothing to prove to you.

And I may be a troll, but it was my intention to spark off a debate on the draft... so if anything, I'm trolling for feelings on that subject. what else does one do in a poltical forum, anyways? Should we all just agree on everything political and discuss football instead?

How come anyone who passionately disagrees with the liberal majority on this site is a "troll"?!

correction, I've been twice and I'm set to go back again next year. As I've dedicated my life to battling fanaticism and terrorism, I expect that it wont be my last trip over there either.

It feels great to actually contribute. The peace-of-mind and sense of accomplishment are amazing and fulfilling.

it's better than Yoga!

Now, get back on topic, what would you think, say, or do IF they reinstituted the draft tomorrow?

I served with people of your mindset, frankly they scared me.

Their family lives off of the public tit for most of their whole life .. you would think they would send more of their children to reimburse us for the tax money they steal from us.

You are a troll because you are starting a "debate" with a laughably stupid premise, in an obvious attempt to start an argument.

As a fellow serviceperson, I'm ashamed of your ignorance.

First of all the chickenhawks won't reinstate the draft. Under the current draft rules most defferments are out the window. I can't see a senator or congressman voting for it knowing their children could be drafted.

I served with people of your mindset, frankly they scared me.

He doesn't even realize that HE IS A FANATIC TOO

I'm passionate about the war on terror, but one could hardly label me a fanatic. I look at every "political" issue rationally and tend to fall towards the center on most. I'm also a scholar of history and religion, with a focus on fanatical Islam and terrorism. I'm deist, pro-choice, and middle-income... none of which align me with the far-right. In fact, I fear them as much as the far-left!

The truth is, I feel very passionately about ridding the world of terrorists and religious fanatics (Pat Robertson included! lol); and have therefore dedicated both my military and civilian careers to that end.

A fanatic? not at all.. but say what you wish...

My intent with this thread was to state my frsutrations with the general ignorance my countrymen have toward the reality of the ME. The truth is that we are doing so much good over there, but the media will never say so. Their liberal agenda prevents that truth from eaching the average citizen.

One way to overcome that would be to re-institute a draft. It would force alot of young americans, who would otherwise be ignorant of the truth, to see it firsthand.

It's a theory, nothing more.

But in the attempt to rid the world of terrorists we make more, the irony ...

Imho the war on terror shouldn't involve mass troops / nation building, it should be handled by special / black ops.

The answer to fanaticism is bullets and bombs and threat of nukes

I wonder if History did better through education and financial growth or through murder and forced democracy?

You're passionate about the "War on Terror" and yet you support attacking and occupying a country which had nothing, it has been proven, to do with any terror attacks on the U.S.

I'd go for drafting the children of the politicians who support this "war", along with the big mouthed supporters who talk big but aren't there.
