Reinstitute the Draft now...

I want the draft reinstituted so as to provide firsthand experiences for those who would not normally see the situation in the Greater Middle East for what it really is. I want more people to see all of the good that we are doing over there so that they come back and spread the truth. The liberal media will never cover the story accurately, so it is time to take more drastic measures to show our countrymen the truth.

It would also be nice to see alot more people get up off their collective lazy arses and actually do something for their great country which provides them with so much prosperity and opportunity. It's about time more people earn their keep and contribute more than carbon dioxide to the greater good.

What would you think, say, or do IF they reinstituted the draft tomorrow?

People like you SHOULD go to the Middle East to see all the "good" you are doing over there. Maybe when people vote in and support a war, they should see what war does and how counter-productive and costly it is.

Good idea

I know what mine REALLY think because I pay attention. I know who on the hill is useful, and who is just there for the dinner parties and perks.

been there, done that, will do so again; and with pleasure! I know the truth. I've seen it and been a part of it.

If all I had was the news to base my judgements, I'd be as lost as most of you...

Well good then! Maybe you can convince them to all join the PNAC crew and take over the world. I'm sure the American people would just be all for it.......oh wait....

correction, I've been twice and I'm set to go back again next year. As I've dedicated my life to battling fanaticism and terrorism, I expect that it wont be my last trip over there either.

It feels great to actually contribute. The peace-of-mind and sense of accomplishment are amazing and fulfilling.

it's better than Yoga!

Now, get back on topic, what would you think, say, or do IF they reinstituted the draft tomorrow?

Was it last year (?) when Chuck Schumer proposed this?

I remember seeing interviews with everyone from upper military brass to front line grunts where they all said they didn't want a draft. They seemed to feel that mixing reluctant/resistant soldiers into an all-volunteer military would be bad for morale and would break down the sense of "brotherhood" that currently exists.

Have you ever thought about battling fascism? You know the kind that Bush has instituted in the massive corporate warefare complex?

I simply don't believe that you're a military member. I don't know a single military member who supports enacting the draft, and certainly not for the reasons you're postulating. Bringing people into the service involuntarily certainly doesn't have the effect of convincing the public of the righteousness of war (as witnessed by Vietnam).

America being the land of the free, would not force its citizens to war on principles they no longer endorse. The war is already hugely unpopular, reinstating the draft would be political suicide for the current administration...

...second thought...yes, the draft is an excellent idea!! :D

I think this is a good idea. I'm planning to have a meeting down at the Beer Hall later today and see who else wants to build a bigger military force at get busy.

Ask your senators and congressmen why THEIR children are not in the armed forces

Why do I not believe you were ever in the military

You are correct on one count, as I do fear the quality of servicemen that would be forced to serve; but our training is the best in the world, so any slackishness that is inherent in the general populace would be quickly fixed and overcome. We'll certainly weed out the weak, and take the strong over to see the truth firsthand!

The first time that they visit a remote village full of people happy to see them, they will then know the truth. And for me, that happened on my very first patrol. Three patrols later, I finally met the enemy face-to-face, and in that meeting I quickly discovered the difference between them and the vast majority of those who truly want us over there.

If you all only knew...

Btw, I could care less if you question my being in the service. I have nothing to prove to you and yours.

I'll have to search for it but I remember hearing that something like .7% of the population at large has a relative serving in Iraq and 1% of congress has a relative serving in Iraq.

But now we're into a whole other thread... ;)

Where were you deployed, and with what units?

For me (non military, but attached in a training/advising role) pretty much continuously deployed since mid 2004.

1st ID Tikrit
42nd ID Tikrit
MNFI Baghdad
101 AA Tikrit

palehorse,
Don't they recruit for the army in low income and welfare communities? Maybe the true slackers have already been recruited by the military. Funny how you call the general populace inherently lazy when they are the most educated and productive workforce in the world.

The small remote villages in Iraq tend to be non-aggressive; send the average American to the urban fighting, bombings and killings in Baghdad, this will have a different effect (there is a reason they refuse to show the dead soldiers come back on tv).
